Buying Guides

Every roundup on this site, assembled from reviews rather than from press releases.

There are 165 roundups here, and every pick in them comes from a product that has been individually reviewed and scored on the same criteria.

They are built to a fixed shape: a top pick, a shortlist table, what to buy and not buy for each, a buying section that explains how the ranking was earned, what not to buy at all, and a named list of what was considered and rejected, with reasons.

Several conclude that you should not buy the category. That is deliberate.

How a roundup is built

Five to seven picks maximum, and frequently three or four, because a list of ten is a list nobody has filtered. Where only two products honestly qualify, only two are listed.

Every roundup names what was considered and rejected, with the specific reason. That section is the most useful part of any of them, and it is the part most sites leave out.

And several roundups argue against the category: waterproof mattresses, orthopaedic toppers and mattress cleaners all conclude that the thing you searched for is not what you need.

How this site works

Nothing on this site is paid for by a brand. No manufacturer has been given copy approval, a preview, or the chance to change a score. Where a link earns a commission, that never changes a score or a ranking, and products are removed from recommendations when they stop deserving the place.

Scores come from the same criteria every time: support, pressure relief, motion isolation, edge support, temperature, durability and value. Where a brand does not publish a specification, that is stated rather than estimated, because an absent number is itself information. Foam density and spring count for your own size are the two most commonly withheld.

The products I will not recommend page and the corrections log are both public, and the affiliate policy sets out the commercial arrangements in full.
