Two facts decide this whole category.
One: a stain voids most mattress guarantees absolutely. Not partially, not at the manufacturer's discretion. It is the single most common reason a legitimate claim is refused, and over eight years the probability of one spill is high. Twenty to forty pounds removes that risk.
Two: a cheap waterproof protector is a plastic sheet with a fabric face. It stops liquid and it stops air. Put one over a deep spring layer and you have sealed off the airflow that was the entire reason you bought the mattress.
So the specification that matters is not waterproofing, which they all do. It is breathability.

Origin Extend Mattress Protector: Best depth fit
Budget to mid · 7.6 / 10
Depth fit is the specification people forget and the one that decides whether it stays on. Modern hybrids run 28 to 35 centimetres while most protectors are cut for around 25, so a protector that pings off a corner every few nights ends up in a drawer.
Measure your mattress from the seam at the top to the seam at the bottom before buying.

You have a deep mattress, which is most modern hybrids.

The common complaint about waterproof protectors is noise and feel, and a soft cover face over the membrane resolves most of it. Worth knowing that most bamboo fabric is bamboo viscose, a chemically processed regenerated fibre, so judge it on the handle rather than the plant.

A quilted pad is effectively a thin topper. If you are still inside a sleep trial, use a thin fitted protector rather than a quilted pad, because the padding masks the firmness you are supposed to be judging.
It protects your trial, not just your guarantee
The point nobody makes
Sleep trial terms typically require the mattress to be in a condition fit for collection. A stained mattress is usually not returnable even inside the trial window.
So the longer the trial, the more valuable the protector. A 365 night trial gives you a year to change your mind and a year in which one spilled drink ends that option.
Fit it before the first night, not after the first accident.
Washing, and the thing that kills them
Wash at 60 degrees if anyone in the house has allergies, because house dust mites survive a 40 degree wash. Forty removes accumulated allergen; sixty kills the population.
The membrane is the fragile part. High heat in a tumble dryer is what destroys waterproof protectors, far more than washing does: the membrane delaminates or cracks and the protector silently stops working while still looking fine.
Tumble low or line dry. And check the care label before buying if you need 60 degree washing, because not every membrane tolerates it.
What not to buy
A cheap plastic-backed protector on a hybrid. You have sealed off the airflow you paid for, and this is the most common reason a new hybrid sleeps hot.
A quilted pad as your only protection. Many are not waterproof at all. Check explicitly.
A protector cut for 25 centimetres on a 32 centimetre mattress. Measure first.
A fitted protector for dust mite allergy. You want a fully zipped six-sided encasement.
Nothing at all. This is the highest ratio of value to cost anywhere in bedding.

Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.
What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
