Products I will not recommend
A recommendation means nothing unless the same standard produces refusals. These are the refusals.
Every site says it is independent. The test is whether it ever says no to something that pays.
This page lists what does not get recommended here and why. It is updated as products change, because a product removed from this list has earned that, and several on it could be fixed by the brand publishing a specification it currently withholds.
Specific products
| Product | Why |
|---|---|
| Derila | 4.8, the lowest score on this site. A small fixed-loft foam pillow sold through urgency mechanics rather than on specification. |
| Simba Hybrid Essential | 5.2 at £549. Exists largely to make the model above it look reasonable. |
| Zeeq Pillow | 5.4. Useful functions depend on an app and a service continuing to exist, on a product that should outlast both. |
| Mlily Memory Gel 200 | 5.5. Shallow foam with no published density, so there is no way to judge how long it lasts. |
| Emma Original | Not bad, but beaten within its own range: the £199 Original Lite has a pocket spring layer this £369 model does not. |
Whole categories
Some products do what they claim and the claim is not worth buying.
Orthopaedic toppers. Two claims that do not survive examination stacked on each other: orthopaedic is unregulated, and no topper can provide support, because support comes from beneath you.
Waterproof mattresses. Almost nobody needs one. A protector does the job better and washes.
Mattress cleaners, as a solution. A mattress cannot be deep cleaned at home, because it cannot be dried. Prevention is the only strategy that works.
Gel-infused foam sold as cooling. Gel is a heat sink with finite capacity. It feels cool for about an hour and does nothing at 3am.
Charcoal and copper infusions. The particles are encapsulated inside the foam cells, so the surface area that would make them work is never in contact with anything.
Anti-snore products marketed at sleep apnoea. No bedding treats it, and using one instead of seeing a GP leaves a serious condition untreated.
Sales tactics
Countdown timers. The Competition and Markets Authority issued a consent order against Emma in May 2026 over urgency countdown timers, which were found unlawful.
Permanent was-and-now pricing. The CMA secured undertakings from Simba in August 2024 requiring that was and now prices reflect genuine previous selling prices. Where a product is discounted almost continuously, the crossed-out figure is a statement about the seller's own pricing.
Spring counts quoted without a size. Counts are quoted for a king, so a double has fewer. A brand that will not state the count in your size is not helping you compare.
Unregulated words used as specifications. Orthopaedic, hypoallergenic and natural have no standard, no certifying body and no test behind them.
Returns policies described as sleep trials. A policy covering an unused mattress is a different product from a trial you can sleep on.
Brands that withhold the specification that matters
This is not a refusal to recommend so much as a permanent asterisk.
Foam density predicts how long foam lasts, with decent comfort layers running 48 to 72 kilograms per cubic metre. Ergoflex is the only brand on this site that publishes it.
Every other foam mattress here is assessed without the single number that would tell you its lifespan. That is worth knowing when a brand offers a ten year guarantee on foam whose density it will not state.
Brands that are no longer here
Not a criticism of the products, and the most important thing on this page for anyone buying from a young brand.
Eve went into administration in 2022. Brook + Wilde was liquidated in 2023. Casper and Leesa have left the UK market.
All four sold ten year guarantees on a product expected to last eight to fifteen years. A guarantee is worth only the company behind it, and your statutory rights sit with the retailer rather than the manufacturer.
How something gets off this page
Publish the specification. Most of the foam entries here would be reassessed on a published density figure.
Change the construction. Scores follow products, not brands.
Drop the tactic. Pricing and urgency criticisms apply to behaviour, which can stop.
Corrections and reassessments are logged on the corrections page. If you think something here is wrong, say so.

How this site works
Nothing here is paid for by a brand. No manufacturer has copy approval, a preview, or the ability to change a score, and where a link earns a commission that never changes a ranking.
Where a brand does not publish a specification, that is stated rather than estimated, because an absent number is itself information. The corrections log and the products I will not recommend page are both public.
