Bedding and Accessories

The layer you actually touch all night, and the part of a bedroom where the labels are least trustworthy.

Bedding is where the most misleading language in this industry sits, and it is also the cheapest part of a bedroom to change.

Four corrections do most of the work here:

Bamboo bedding is bamboo viscose, cellulose dissolved in chemicals that are typically not recovered. It is pleasant, and it is not a checkable environmental claim. Lyocell is the fibre whose name describes a verifiable process.

Thread count has been inflated since manufacturers began counting plies. Use fibre, weave and depth instead.

Satin is a weave, not a fibre, and eucalyptus silk and bamboo silk are not silk.

Thirteen and a half tog is a convention from draughtier housing. Seven to 10.5 suits most modern UK bedrooms.

Bedding roundups

The one specification that decides a lot of this

Sixty degrees, not forty

House dust mites survive a 40 degree wash. Forty removes accumulated allergen, and the population returns. Sixty kills them.

This conflicts with the nicer fibres. Bamboo viscose, lyocell and silk all dislike 60 degree washing, so in an allergy household cotton percale that tolerates a hot wash beats a smoother fibre you have to treat gently.

The order of effect for dust mite allergy is worth knowing, because the duvet is not at the top of it: a fully zipped six-sided mattress encasement first, then bedding washed at 60 weekly, then a washable pillow, and the duvet fourth.

Bedding reviews

Every product below has been individually scored.

The cheapest changes that do the most

The pillowcase. You sleep on the case, not the pillow, and a polyester one insulates while holding moisture against your face. It costs a fraction of anything else in the room.

The duvet tog. If you wake up hot, this is the bigger lever than any mattress.

A breathable protector rather than a plastic-backed one. A laminated layer blocks air as well as liquid and is the most common reason a good hybrid mattress sleeps hot.

Deep fitted sheets sized to the actual mattress depth. Standard UK sheets are cut for about 25 centimetres and modern mattresses run 28 to 35.

How this site works

Nothing on this site is paid for by a brand. No manufacturer has been given copy approval, a preview, or the chance to change a score. Where a link earns a commission, that never changes a score or a ranking, and products are removed from recommendations when they stop deserving the place.

Scores come from the same criteria every time: support, pressure relief, motion isolation, edge support, temperature, durability and value. Where a brand does not publish a specification, that is stated rather than estimated, because an absent number is itself information. Foam density and spring count for your own size are the two most commonly withheld.

The products I will not recommend page and the corrections log are both public, and the affiliate policy sets out the commercial arrangements in full.
