Best bed bridges

A bed bridge fills the trench between two single mattresses pushed together, and how well it works depends on what created the trench.

I earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page. It never changes what I recommend, and I publish negative verdicts on brands I earn from. Editorial independence.

Two singles pushed together do not make one bed. They make two beds with a gap, and the gap is where people end up.

A bed bridge is a firm wedge or connector that fills that trench, usually with a strap that runs underneath both mattresses to hold them together. It is a cheap fix for a real problem: hotel twin rooms, guest rooms with two singles, and couples who have bought separate mattresses for different firmness.

It works better on some setups than others, and the deciding factor is whether the two mattresses are the same height and the same firmness.

The complete answer is a zip and link, which is two mattresses built to join. This page covers when a bridge is enough and when it is not.

Tweak: Best complete solution

Mid range · 7.8 / 10

Scores 7.8. A different firmness on each side in a single mattress, so there is no gap at all. Every dual firmness mattress has a transition zone down the middle, and in a king or larger you are both well clear of it.

Buy it if

You want two firmnesses in one surface with no join to bridge.

Do not buy it if

You need two beds that separate.

Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress: Best matched pair

£374 area · 8.4 / 10

The highest scoring mattress on this site at 8.4. A bridge works best between two identical mattresses, because equal height and equal firmness means the bridge only has to fill a gap rather than correct a step.

Buy it if

You are buying two singles and want them identical.

Do not buy it if

You specifically need different firmness on each side.

Rem-Fit 4000 Ortho Elite Hybrid Mattress: Best firm side of a mismatched pair

Mid range · 7.6 / 10

Nine out of ten for support here, the highest on the site. Pairing a firm mattress with a softer one is the reason people use two singles at all, and the trade is that a bridge has more work to do between different firmnesses.

Buy it if

One of you needs genuinely firm support and the other does not.

Do not buy it if

You both want the same thing.

Silentnight Airmax Topper: Best way to smooth the join

Budget to mid · 7.4 / 10

Scores 7.4. A topper running across both mattresses is what actually disguises a join, which is why zip and link ranges sell exactly that. A bridge fills the trench and a topper hides it, and together they work considerably better than either alone.

Buy it if

You have a bridge and can still feel the seam.

Do not buy it if

The two mattresses are different heights.

When a bridge works, and when it does not

Your setup against the outcome
The two mattresses areWhat to expect
Identical, same ageA bridge works well. Add a topper across both and the join disappears.
Same height, different firmnessWorkable. You will feel the change rather than the gap.
Different heightsPoor. A bridge fills a gap; it cannot correct a step.
Different ages, one dippedPoor. The dip reappears through anything you put over it.
On two separate basesCheck the bases are level first. Frequently they are not.

The third row is the one that catches people. If one mattress is two centimetres taller, no bridge fixes that, and the fix is a topper on the lower one or matching mattresses.

What to look for in a bridge

A firm wedge rather than a soft filler. A soft bridge compresses under the weight it is meant to support and the trench reappears.

An underneath strap or connector. This is what actually holds the mattresses together. A wedge with no strap gets pushed out of the gap within a night or two.

A length that matches the mattresses. A short bridge leaves the gap open at the head or foot, which is where people notice it.

Something to cover it. A super king fitted sheet over both mattresses does more than the bridge itself, because it holds everything in one plane.

What two singles actually make

Combining UK sizes
Two of theseMake
UK singles, 90 x 190cm180 x 190cm. Super king width, ten centimetres short in length.
Zip and link singles, 90 x 200cmSuper king, 180 x 200cm. The proper combination.
Small singles, 75 x 200cmKing, 150 x 200cm.

The first row is the trap. Standard UK singles are 190 centimetres long and a super king is 200, so two ordinary singles make a bed that is the right width and too short, and super king bedding will not fit it properly.

This is why zip and link singles are made at 200 centimetres, and it is the main practical reason to buy them rather than improvising with two ordinary ones.

When to stop bridging and buy zip and link

A bridge is a fix. Zip and link is the design.

Two mattresses built to join, zipped along the inside edges, at the right length, with a topper that runs across both. It solves three things at once: different firmness for each person, access up narrow staircases, and handling, since one person can turn a single where a super king is a two-person job.

If you are pushing two singles together permanently, and especially if they are different heights or the wrong length, the bridge is a workaround for a bed you have not bought yet.

If it is a hotel room for three nights, a bridge and a topper is exactly the right answer.

What not to do

Bridge two mattresses of different heights. It fills a gap, not a step.

Use a soft filler. It compresses under the weight it is meant to carry.

Buy a bridge with no underneath strap. It works its way out of the gap.

Expect two standard UK singles to make a super king. They are ten centimetres too short.

Bridge over a dipped mattress. The dip comes through anything you put on it.

Also considered, and why they are not here

A roundup is only as useful as what it leaves out, so here is what was assessed and rejected for this list.

Considered and not recommended here
ProductWhy it is not on the list
Hypnos rangeHand-built construction with zip and link widely available, which is the proper version of what a bridge approximates.
Harrison SpinksThe highest scoring entry here at 8.3, and zip and link is common at this end of the market for exactly the access and handling reasons.
Simba TopperThe highest scoring topper here at 7.5. Running one across both mattresses does more to hide a join than any bridge does.
Origin LumbarCloudThirty-five centimetres and up to 8,000 springs for £797. If you were joining two singles to get a large bed, this is what one mattress at that size costs.

How this list is made, and who made it

Independence

No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.

Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.

What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.

What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.

What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

See editorial independence, corrections and the author page.

How these were chosen

Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.

A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.

Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.

I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.

Prices move constantly. Judge the cash price on the day rather than any percentage beside it. See every review on this site or where the real savings are.

Questions people ask

Do bed bridges work?

Between two identical mattresses of the same height, yes, particularly with a topper running across both. Between mattresses of different heights they do not, because a bridge fills a gap rather than correcting a step.

Do two single mattresses make a super king?

Two UK singles make 180 by 190 centimetres, which is super king width and ten centimetres short in length, so super king bedding will not fit properly. Zip and link singles are made at 200 centimetres for this reason.

What should I look for in a bed bridge?

A firm wedge rather than a soft filler, an underneath strap that actually holds the mattresses together, and a length that matches the mattresses so the gap is not left open at the head or foot.

Is zip and link better than a bed bridge?

For a permanent bed, yes. Zip and link is two mattresses built to join at the right length, and it solves different firmness, staircase access and handling at once. A bridge is the right answer for a hotel room for three nights.
