Foam does one thing better than any sprung mattress and one thing considerably worse, and both come from the same property.
Best: motion isolation. There is no mechanical linkage between one part of the surface and another, so a partner's movement does not travel. Nothing sprung matches it.
Worst: heat. Small closed cells, almost no air movement, so heat reaching the foam stays there. No treatment changes that, because the limitation is structural.
What separates a good foam mattress from a bad one is density, measured in kilograms per cubic metre. It is the best available predictor of how long a foam mattress holds its shape, and almost nobody prints it.

Two things set this apart and neither is a feel. It publishes that its comfort layer is high density, which is the specification that predicts how long foam lasts. And it has traded in the UK since 2006, which is its guarantee period twice over, in a category where Brook + Wilde was liquidated in 2023, Eve went into administration in 2022 and Casper and Leesa have left the market entirely.

Tempur Sensation Elite: Best material, if you accept the heat

Tempur's material sits at the high end of the density range and beyond, which is why it feels slower and denser and why it costs what it costs. The ranges are feels rather than quality tiers: Original is the classic slow sink, Sensation is more responsive and easier to turn over on, Cloud adds a softer comfort layer.
Test it lying down for ten minutes. The material softens in response to body heat, so pressing it by hand gives exactly the wrong impression.
Buy it if
You want the slow-moulding feel nothing else reproduces, with easier movement than Original.

Density is the whole specification
Standard memory foam runs from around 16 to 80 kilograms per cubic metre, with decent comfort layers between 48 and 72.

Foam cost is dominated by density, which is exactly why brands competing on price stay quiet about it. At the cheap end, silence is informative rather than neutral. If a listing tells you the depth, the cover material and a comfort layer name but not the density, you have been told everything except the thing that matters.
The heat problem, and what actually helps
Gel, graphite, copper and phase change panels all conduct heat away from your skin at the point of contact. That part is real. The heat then needs somewhere to go, and in foam there is nowhere: it travels a few centimetres and stops.
So treated foam feels cool for twenty minutes and then stops mattering. No amount of spending inside a foam range fixes it, because the limitation is the material.
What genuinely helps, in order: a breathable mattress protector rather than a plastic-backed one, which is the most common hidden cause of a hot bed; a 7 to 10.5 tog duvet instead of a 13.5; and a cotton percale or lyocell pillowcase. All three cost under a hundred pounds between them.
If none of that is enough, you want a hybrid, not a better foam.
Who foam genuinely suits
Couples where one disturbs the other. This is foam's strongest case and nothing sprung competes. Even a 10,000 spring mattress transmits more movement than deep foam.
People who do not sleep hot. Obvious, and it is the filter that removes most buyers.
Anyone who wants a consistent surface. Foam does not have springs to fatigue at different rates, so it ages more evenly than a poorly made hybrid.
Who it does not suit: heavier sleepers, who compress further and develop impressions faster, and anyone who wants bounce or finds it hard to turn over.
What not to buy
Foam with no published density. At the budget end this is the norm, and it means you cannot tell a three year mattress from a ten year one.
Gel or copper infused foam bought for cooling. The treatment addresses the surface; the material still has nowhere to put the heat.
A foam mattress if you are over about sixteen stone. You compress further and impressions form faster. A firm hybrid with fewer, stronger springs is the better structure.

Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.
What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
