Verdict

8.2/ 10

Thirty-five centimetres and up to 8,000 springs for 797 pounds, which is a specification that hand-built British bedmakers charge two to three thousand for. It is the third Origin mattress sold in the UK, a fact several review sites get wrong, and it is the most mattress per pound available in Britain.

Buy it if

You want the largest, most heavily sprung mattress available at a sensible price, and you are comfortable buying from a newer brand.

Avoid it if

Institutional longevity matters to you, you want to lie on one first, or you are lighter than about eleven stone and will never reach the lower layers.

The scores

Overall
8.2 / 10

An extraordinary specification for the money, with the trade you would expect from a newer brand.

Value
9 / 10

Thirty-five centimetres and up to 8,000 springs at 797 pounds has no UK equivalent.

Support
9 / 10

Depth and spring density together. Genuinely suits heavier sleepers.

Temperature
8 / 10

A very deep spring layer moves a lot of air.

Edge support
7 / 10

Reasonable. Not specifically reinforced, which is the one gap at this price.

Motion isolation
9 / 10

Very high spring density damps movement extremely well.

Trial and guarantee
6 / 10

A 200 day trial, against a shorter UK trading history than the alternatives.

Origin sells three UK mattresses, not one

Several UK sites get this wrong

Origin sells three mattresses in the UK: the Hybrid at £265, the Hybrid Pro at £374 and this, the LumbarCloud, at £797.

A number of UK review sites state that only the Hybrid is available here. It is not correct, and it matters because the two models above it are the better mattresses.

What 797 pounds buys elsewhere

Comparable depth and spring count
MattressDepthSpringsFrom
Origin LumbarCloud35cmUp to 8,000£797
Simba Hybrid Ultra34cmUp to 7,300£1,749
Brook + Wilde Ultima30cmAround 6,000£1,395
Simba Natural Hybrid Apex32cmUp to 6,700£1,499

The LumbarCloud is the deepest and most heavily sprung mattress in that table and less than half the price of any of them.

Two honest caveats. Spring counts are not directly comparable across brands, because a great deal depends on spring height and where in the mattress they sit. And a refurbished Simba Hybrid Ultra has listed at around £699, which is the one thing that undercuts it.

Thirty-five centimetres is a load specification

Depth is treated as a quality measure and it is really a statement about who the mattress is for.

A mattress supports you by compressing until the resistance matches your weight. A ten stone sleeper reaches that point within the first few centimetres of comfort layer. An eighteen stone sleeper compresses considerably further.

So the bottom third of a 35 centimetre mattress does real work for a heavier sleeper and nothing at all for a lighter one. If you are under about eleven stone, you are paying for material you will never reach, and the Hybrid Pro at 374 pounds is the better buy for you.

Two practical consequences at this depth. You will need deep fitted sheets cut for 35 centimetres or more, which standard UK sheets at 25 centimetres do not come close to. And check the finished bed height: 35 centimetres on a frame designed for a 20 centimetre mattress puts the sleeping surface higher than most people expect.

What you are giving up

Same as the rest of the range, and worth restating at this price.

Trading history. Origin is a newer entrant. A long guarantee from a company with a short trading record is a promise from an entity that has not yet demonstrated it will be there. That is true of Emma, Simba and Otty too, and more acute here.

No shops. You cannot lie on one.

Smaller returns operation. A large company collecting a 35 centimetre mattress is a different experience from a small one, and at this depth the mattress is heavy and awkward.

Your protection is the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which sits with the retailer and runs up to six years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Buying direct means Origin is that retailer.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Several UK mattress review sites state that Origin sells only one mattress in the United Kingdom. Origin sells three here: the Hybrid at 265 pounds, the Hybrid Pro at 374 and the LumbarCloud at 797. That matters because the two models above the entry point are the better-specified mattresses, and a reader told only the entry model exists will not find them.

Should you buy it?

Yes if you are of average or heavier build and you want the most mattress per pound available in Britain. Thirty-five centimetres and up to 8,000 springs at 797 pounds is not matched by anything.

If you are lighter than about eleven stone, the Hybrid Pro at 374 is the better buy, because you will never reach the bottom third of this one. Buy deep fitted sheets either way.

Questions people ask

How many mattresses does Origin sell in the UK?

Three: the Hybrid at 265 pounds, the Hybrid Pro at 374 and the LumbarCloud at 797. Several UK review sites state that only the Hybrid is available here, which is wrong and matters because the two models above it are better specified.

Is a 35cm mattress better?

Only if you reach the bottom of it. A mattress compresses until the resistance matches your weight, so a ten stone sleeper never engages the lower third while an eighteen stone sleeper does. Under about eleven stone, the Hybrid Pro is the better buy.

What sheets do I need for a 35cm mattress?

Deep fitted sheets cut for 35 centimetres or more. Standard UK fitted sheets are cut for around 25 centimetres and will not come close. Check the finished bed height too.
