Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress Review

Thirty-one centimetres, eight layers, up to 5,700 springs and seven zones from 374 pounds. Simba's comparable model gives you less for 899. That gap is the most striking thing in the UK market.

Verdict

8.4/ 10From £374 UK single, direct

Thirty-one centimetres, eight layers, up to 5,700 TitaniumCoil springs and seven zones from 374 pounds. Simba's comparable model gives you 28 cm and up to 4,800 springs from 899 pounds. That gap is the single most striking thing in the UK mattress market and I cannot explain it with materials.

The scores

Overall
8.4 / 10

The best specification-to-price ratio I can find in the UK. The brand risk is the only caveat.

Value
10 / 10

Two and a half times cheaper than Simba's equivalent with more spring and more depth.

Support
9 / 10

Two spring layers, 5,700 springs and seven zones at 31cm is a genuinely premium build.

Temperature
9 / 10

Tencel cover, graphite latex and a deep double spring layer. Very little foam trapping heat.

Edge support
8 / 10

Deep dual spring layers hold the perimeter far better than any foam build.

Motion isolation
8 / 10

Individually pocketed across two layers. Good for couples.

Trial and guarantee
9 / 10

200 days, which is what makes a smaller brand a reasonable risk.

The comparison Origin does not need to make

I keep returning to this because it is the clearest example in the category of what you are paying for when you buy a famous mattress.

Try before you buyNoYes, in Bensons stores

Simba is a well made mattress and I score it highly. But on every measurable construction figure the Origin matches or beats it, at under half the price. The difference is retail presence, advertising, and the confidence that comes from a name people recognise.

Whether that confidence is worth 525 pounds is a genuine question rather than a rhetorical one. For some people it is. For most, it is not.

What the proprietary names actually mean

Origin names everything, which is common in this industry and usually unhelpful. Here is the translation.

  • TitaniumCoil. The main pocket spring unit. Origin's own branding for its steel springs. Treat it as a spring count rather than a technology.
  • HexaGrid Plus. A structured foam layer with a hexagonal cut pattern, which is a real and sensible way to create zoned give without changing foam density. Several brands do a version of this.
  • Graphite Crystal Latex. Latex with graphite added. Graphite conducts heat away from the surface, and latex is naturally cooler and more resilient than memory foam. The material is genuinely good, the name is doing too much work.
  • PolarSilk Tencel. A Tencel cover. Tencel is a lyocell fibre that handles moisture better than polyester and feels cool to the touch. Real benefit, ordinary material.

None of this is fake. All of it is normal good practice with a trademark attached.

Who it suits, and who it does not

Most sleepers

At 31 cm with seven zones and a medium firm to medium plush feel, this is the most accommodating mattress in Origin's range and one of the more accommodating in the UK. Zoning means the shoulder and hip get more give than the lumbar, which is what makes a single firmness work for different positions.

Heavier sleepers

Better suited than the standard Hybrid. Two spring layers and 31 cm of depth means more to compress before you reach the base, which is exactly what a heavier sleeper needs. I would still consider Otty's Extra Firm above about 18 stone.

One practical warning

Thirty-one centimetres is a deep mattress. Check your bed frame height, your headboard and your fitted sheets before ordering. Standard UK fitted sheets are cut for around 25 cm and will not stay on. Deep fitted sheets are cheap, but nobody warns you and it is the first thing you discover.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Spring count is treated across the category as the headline measure of a hybrid, and past a point it stops meaning what buyers think. Origin reaching 5,700 springs and Simba reaching 4,800 does not mean Origin offers 19 percent more support. Beyond roughly 2,000 springs in a king, manufacturers increase the count by using smaller units in additional layers, which changes the character of the support rather than the amount of it. Both of these are well built mattresses and the meaningful difference between them is 525 pounds, not 900 springs.

Should you buy it?

If you want the most mattress your money can buy in the UK and you can accept a brand without a shopfront, this is it. I would buy one myself and I have said so on the best mattress page, where it sits second only because Otty has the longer UK track record.

If you need to try before you buy, go to a Bensons for Beds store and lie on the Simba Hybrid Pro instead, and accept that you are paying about 525 pounds for the privilege of being certain.

Questions people ask

Is the Origin Hybrid Pro better than the Simba Hybrid Pro?

On every measurable construction figure, yes: 31cm against 28cm, up to 5,700 springs against 4,800, seven stated zones against none, at 374 pounds against 899. Simba's advantages are a retail presence where you can try one and the confidence of a known name.

What is HexaGrid Plus?

A structured foam layer with a hexagonal cut pattern, which creates zoned give without changing foam density. It is a real and sensible technique that several brands use under different names. The material is genuinely good and the name is doing too much work.

Will a 31cm mattress fit my bed?

Check three things first: your bed frame height, your headboard, and your sheets. Standard UK fitted sheets are cut for around 25cm and will not stay on a 31cm mattress. Deep fitted sheets are cheap, but nobody warns you.
