Mattress Care and Cleaning

A mattress cannot be properly dried at home, which is why most mattress cleaning advice is damage limitation.

Two facts govern almost everything on this page.

You cannot deep clean a mattress at home. Water goes in easily and comes out slowly, and once moisture reaches the foam or the spring unit it can sit there for days. That is how mould starts inside a mattress, which is considerably worse than the stain you were treating.

A stain voids most guarantees absolutely. Which makes a protector, at 20 to 40 pounds, the highest ratio of value to cost anywhere in bedding.

So the useful advice splits in two: prevent, and when something happens, treat the surface only with as little liquid as possible.

The routine that actually keeps a mattress clean

What to do and how often
TaskHow oftenWhy
Wash bedding at 60 degreesWeeklyDust mites survive a 40 degree wash
Wash the protectorEvery few weeksIt is doing the work. Wash it, not the mattress.
Vacuum the surfaceEvery few monthsRemoves skin and dust before it works in
Air it uncoveredEvery few monthsParticularly on a solid platform base
Rotate head to footEvery 2 to 3 monthsSpreads wear. Turn as well if double-sided.
Check slat gapsAnnuallyOver 7.5cm causes sagging and voids guarantees

Note what is not on that list: wet cleaning. The protector is the thing you wash.

Cleaning and stains

Blot rather than rub, use as little liquid as you can, work from the outside inward, and dry it completely with a window open and a fan across the surface before putting bedding back. Never steam clean: it drives moisture into the fillings and frequently voids the guarantee.

Lifespan, and knowing when it is finished

Lay a straight edge across the mattress and measure the gap at its deepest point. More than about 25 millimetres and it is done, and no topper fixes it because a topper conforms to whatever is underneath.

Foam fails invisibly by compression set: cell walls gradually collapse, so the mattress loses height and support while looking identical. Density predicts how long that takes, with decent comfort layers running 48 to 72 kilograms per cubic metre, and almost nobody publishes it.

The base creates faults and then disqualifies the claim

This is the most expensive thing people get wrong. Slats more than about 7.5 centimetres apart let the mattress sag into the gaps, and almost every guarantee excludes damage caused by an unsuitable base.

So the frame causes the fault and then voids the claim. Measuring takes a minute, and plywood costs less than any topper.

On a double or larger, a centre rail with a supporting leg. On a solid platform base, air the mattress every few months, because moisture collects underneath where nothing can dry it.

How this site works

Nothing on this site is paid for by a brand. No manufacturer has been given copy approval, a preview, or the chance to change a score. Where a link earns a commission, that never changes a score or a ranking, and products are removed from recommendations when they stop deserving the place.

Scores come from the same criteria every time: support, pressure relief, motion isolation, edge support, temperature, durability and value. Where a brand does not publish a specification, that is stated rather than estimated, because an absent number is itself information. Foam density and spring count for your own size are the two most commonly withheld.

The products I will not recommend page and the corrections log are both public, and the affiliate policy sets out the commercial arrangements in full.
