With social media taking the world by storm, many people turn to their favourite influencers for tips and advice. While the world of social media and influencers can be problematic at best, plenty of accounts aim to improve lives, help and inspire their followers.

Mrs Hinch is a leading influencer in home-care, interior design and cleanliness, in which she shared her tips and tricks with over 4 million followers. Keep reading to find out how Mrs Hinch prefers to clean her mattress and other ways you can help eliminate tough stains and odours.

Who Is Mrs Hinch?

Mrs Hinch started her Instagram account in March 2018, after she bought her first home with her husband and wanted to share her interior design journey. The account gained popularity rapidly and achieved 1 million followers after only three months and 3 million followers by the end of 2019. Despite not having a background in professional cleaning, her followers have praised Mrs Hinch for her extensive home cleaning tips and recommendations.

Since achieving online success, Mrs Hinch has released several popular books and a memoir. The Activity Journal reached number 1 on the Sunday Times Bestseller List, and The Little Books of Lists and her memoir This Is Me also became number 1 bestsellers in the UK. Mrs Hinch's cleaning tips have also been featured on the popular daytime TV show This Morning, and she also shares a podcast titled All The Best with her husband, Jamie.

Mrs Hinch’s Mattress Cleaning Method

Washing the bedsheets is common and should be done frequently; however, cleaning the mattress can often be neglected. Learning how to clean your mattress is ideal for removing stains or spillages but can also improve the mattress's overall hygiene, freshness, and durability. Mrs Hinch shared her easy step-by-step guide through Instagram to help deodorise the mattress without the need for expensive products.

  1. Firstly, remove all bedding and wash if necessary.
  2. Sprinkle baking soda using a sieve over the mattress to help eliminate unpleasant odours.
  3. Leave the baking soda on the mattress for 1 hour so it can absorb into the mattress.
  4. Use a hand-held vacuum cleaner, preferably in a cold setting, to clean any remaining baking soda residue.

Important to note:
As well as cleaning your mattress when necessary, it's also worth investing in a mattress protector to give your mattress more durability by protecting it against any stains or damage. Mattress protectors can include waterproof features, as well as anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic properties.

Cleaning Method Criticisms

While Mrs Hinch's mattress cleaning method has proved popular amongst her followers, she has faced some criticism from those who say her method is not entirely effective.

Sleep expert, Natalie Armstrong, claims Mrs Hinch's method is simply an old wives tale and cleaning a mattress is not as straightforward as the simple steps may suggest. Armstrong states that most modern mattresses feature special treatments, such as Purotex, which serve to keep your mattress hygienic and clean, without the need for additional cleaning products.

In addition, while baking soda may help eliminate odours and maintain the freshness of your mattress, you may need to seek other methods for removing tough stains and spillages.

Mattress Cleaning Alternatives

There are plenty of processes and techniques which people can use for cleaning mattresses. However, the type of method can vary depending on your reasons for cleaning. Below are some cleaning tips to help keep your mattress hygienic and fresh.

mattress cleaning alternatives
  1. General Maintenence: If you want to maintain the cleanliness and freshness of your mattress, you can follow some easy steps. Firstly, you can use a handheld vacuum to remove any hairs, dead skin, dirt or bacteria. Secondly, sprinkle baking soda over your mattress and leave for 1 hour, or longer for a deeper clean. Finally, use the vacuum to clean any remaining residue.
  2. Urine Stains: For those with children or pets, it may be handy to know how to effectively clean urine stains. To start, you can dab the stain with a dry cloth to remove excess liquid. Next, mix a cup of distilled white vinegar, 2 cups of cold water and 2-3 tablespoons of laundry detergent, then spray over the stain. Leave for 15 minutes, dab with a cloth and then cover the stain with baking soda for 8-10 hours.
  3. Blood Stains: For those who experience a regular period, bloodstains in bed aren’t too uncommon. To help remove blood stains, you can mix 60ml of hydrogen peroxide, 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap and 1 tablespoon of salt. Secondly, you can cover the stain with the mixture and leave it for 15 minutes. Lastly, you can scrape away the mixture and use a cloth to remove any remaining residue.
  4. Sweat Stains: You can typically clean sweat stains using the general maintenance method, however, there are also some alternative cleaning techniques. For example, you can mix 2 cups of warm water with ¼ cup of vinegar and spray over the stain. Leave the solution for approximately 30 minutes and then clean with laundry detergent.

Fun fact!
The absence of sweat stains doesn't necessarily mean your mattress doesn't require cleaning. It is estimated that the average person can sweat between 0.5-2 litres every night. However, this can differ depending on factors, such as weight, gender and environment.

The Popularity of ‘Cleanfluencers’

The term 'cleanfluencer' comes from the ever-growing world of social media influencers, who are quickly becoming the new generation of celebrities. Influencers have the power to start trends, promote businesses and express their beliefs and opinions to large audiences. While there are many different types of influencers, 'cleanfluencers' are rising in popularity, with Mrs Hinch seemingly leading the pack.

So, what has caused this surge in popularity? Kate Joyness-Burgess, a PR agency manager, claims that people are seeking more authenticity from their influencers, and are getting tired of the typical beauty, fashion and fitness accounts that previously saturated Instagram. Cleanfluencers offer authenticity and familiarity by allowing you to enter their home and watch them engage in relatable tasks, such as cleaning the sink or scrubbing a toilet.

In addition, the rise of popular TV shows, such as Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, has prompted many to take more pride in their homes. This may have been encouraged by the Covid pandemic, which saw more people staying indoors, and possibly focusing more on maintaining a clean and tidy space. Whatsmore, research agency Opinium also states that the average British person spends 22 hours indoors, with 45% blaming the weather and 22% claiming work commitments keep them indoors. With the new generation being dubbed 'The Indoor Generation', it seems that home-based influencers may continue to rise in popularity.
