What a score means
8 and above is genuinely good. 7 to 8 is sound. 6 to 7 has a real caveat. Below 6 means I would steer you elsewhere, and the review says where.

How I score
Every review scores the same seven things and the overall figure is a judgement rather than an average. Value, support, temperature, edge support, motion isolation, and the trial and guarantee terms, plus whatever else the product turns on.
Two principles run through all of it.
A score is against the market, not against the range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both get scored against what else you could buy for the money, not against their own stablemates.
The right product depends on you. A high score does not mean buy it. A 35 centimetre mattress scoring 8.2 is the wrong purchase for someone under eleven stone who will never reach its lower layers. Every review says who it suits and who it does not, and that section matters more than the number.
