This site has two halves. The reviews and roundups tell you what to buy. The guides tell you why, which is the half that stops you being sold to.
Almost every expensive mistake in this category comes from a term that sounds like a specification and is not one. Orthopaedic is unregulated. Hybrid covers two completely different constructions. Bamboo bedding is usually viscose. Thread count has been inflated since manufacturers began counting plies.

Two rules cover most of this. A mattress cannot be properly dried at home, so wet cleaning is damage limitation rather than maintenance. And a stain voids most guarantees absolutely, which makes a protector the highest ratio of value to cost in bedding.

The interventions with the strongest evidence are also the cheapest: a dark room, morning daylight, and a consistent wake time, which is more effective than a consistent bedtime. If sleep has been a problem for weeks rather than nights, cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia is the evidence-based first-line treatment in the UK and a GP can refer you.

Holding the industry to it
This category has a poor record and it is documented rather than implied. Four brands reviewed here have gone: Eve into administration in 2022, Brook + Wilde liquidated in 2023, and Casper and Leesa out of the UK entirely. All sold ten year guarantees on a product expected to last eight to fifteen.
The regulator has been active too: the CMA secured undertakings from Simba in August 2024 over was and now pricing, and a consent order against Emma in May 2026 over urgency countdown timers, which were found unlawful.

How this site works
Nothing on this site is paid for by a brand. No manufacturer has been given copy approval, a preview, or the chance to change a score. Where a link earns a commission, that never changes a score or a ranking, and products are removed from recommendations when they stop deserving the place.
Scores come from the same criteria every time: support, pressure relief, motion isolation, edge support, temperature, durability and value. Where a brand does not publish a specification, that is stated rather than estimated, because an absent number is itself information. Foam density and spring count for your own size are the two most commonly withheld.
