Mattress Comparisons

Fourteen head-to-head comparisons, scored on the same criteria, including four involving brands that no longer sell here.

I earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page. It never changes what I recommend, and I publish negative verdicts on brands I earn from. Editorial independence.

A comparison is only useful if both products are scored the same way, so the numbers on these pages are the ones from each product's own review. They do not change to suit a comparison.

Every one of these ends with an or neither option, because the two products someone is weighing up are frequently both beaten by something they have not considered.

Four of these are no longer live

Eve went into administration in 2022. Brook + Wilde was liquidated in 2023. Casper and Leesa have left the UK market.

Those pages are kept because people still search for them, and because a guarantee is worth only the company behind it.

What these pages keep finding

The model a brand markets hardest is frequently not the best thing it sells. The Emma Original Lite at £199 has a three-zone pocket spring layer that the £369 Original does not. A refurbished Simba Hybrid Ultra has listed at around £699 against £1,749 new, which is better value than anything else Simba sells.

Hybrid covers two different constructions. Simba's Aerocoils are a 25mm micro-spring comfort layer over a foam base. Otty's Original has a 16cm pocket spring core. Both are sold as hybrids, and only one is supported by springs.

Almost nobody publishes foam density, the figure that predicts how long foam lasts, with decent comfort layers running 48 to 72 kilograms per cubic metre. Ergoflex is the only brand on this site that does.

Both major brands have been before the regulator. The CMA secured undertakings from Simba in August 2024 requiring that was and now prices reflect genuine previous selling prices, and issued a consent order against Emma in May 2026 over urgency countdown timers, which were found unlawful.

How to read a comparison

Ignore the brand and ask four questions. Is there a spring layer? How tall is it? What is underneath it? What is the total depth?

Then two more that decide whether a mattress suits you rather than whether it is good: what do you weigh, and how do you sleep? Firmness ratings are set for roughly ten to fifteen stone, so under that a rated 7 feels firmer than 7, and over it the same mattress supports less than the number implies.

How this site works

Nothing on this site is paid for by a brand. No manufacturer has been given copy approval, a preview, or the chance to change a score. Where a link earns a commission, that never changes a score or a ranking, and products are removed from recommendations when they stop deserving the place.

Scores come from the same criteria every time: support, pressure relief, motion isolation, edge support, temperature, durability and value. Where a brand does not publish a specification, that is stated rather than estimated, because an absent number is itself information. Foam density and spring count for your own size are the two most commonly withheld.

The products I will not recommend page and the corrections log are both public, and the affiliate policy sets out the commercial arrangements in full.
