How to stop a mattress sliding

A sliding mattress is almost always a smooth base or a missing edge, and both have cheap fixes.

Two ways to fix it

Add friction between the mattress and the base, or add a physical stop at the head or foot.

Friction fixes suit slatted frames. A physical stop is better on smooth platform bases where nothing grips.

Why it slides

A smooth base surface. Varnished slats, a laminated platform deck or a divan with a slippery ticking give the mattress nothing to grip.

No frame lip. Divans and platform tops are flat, so there is nothing physically stopping movement. Frames with side rails rarely have this problem.

A mattress smaller than the base. Even a two centimetre gap lets it travel, and this is common where a European-sized frame has a UK mattress on it, or the reverse.

Slippery mattress ticking. Some covers, particularly tightly woven synthetic ones, have very low friction.

Getting in and out from one side. Consistent directional force, every night.

Friction fixes, cheapest first

Non-slip rug underlay or matting, cut to size and laid between mattress and base. A few pounds, works immediately, and is the answer for most people. Choose an open mesh type rather than a solid rubber sheet, so it does not block airflow underneath the mattress.

Velcro strips, one side on the base and one on the mattress underside. Effective and permanent, and check it will not damage the ticking.

A grippy mattress protector. Some have a textured underside, which solves the problem and the stain problem at once.

Clean the base. Dust on a laminated deck acts like tiny ball bearings, and a wipe with a damp cloth restores a surprising amount of grip.

Physical stops

A footboard or side rails, if you are choosing a frame. This is the structural answer and it removes the problem permanently.

Thin wooden battens screwed to the base at the head or foot, standing a couple of centimetres proud. Cheap, and check they cannot be felt through the mattress.

Push the bed against a wall at the head, which stops downward travel and is free. This is usually the direction of movement, because people push off the mattress getting up.

If it is the topper rather than the mattress

A far more common complaint, and it has a different answer.

A deep fitted sheet sized for the mattress and topper together is the reliable fix, and it works better than corner straps or grip mats, which handle the corners and not the middle.

Add the two depths and buy a few centimetres over, because the fabric has to fold under rather than merely reach the edge. Standard UK sheets are cut for about 25 centimetres and modern mattresses run 28 to 35.

A topper that has gone diagonal by week two ends up in a cupboard, so this is worth budgeting for at the same time as the topper rather than afterwards.

What the movement might be telling you

Occasionally sliding is a symptom rather than the problem.

Slats shifting out of position change the surface the mattress sits on, and gaps then exceed the 7.5 centimetre limit that causes sagging and voids most guarantees. Slat holders or webbing tape fix it.

A frame working loose moves slightly under load, which the mattress rides. Tighten every fixing at six months and then annually, and on metal frames use nylon washers at metal-to-metal joints.

A bed that is not level, on uneven boards, gives the mattress a direction to travel in. Felt pads or shims under the feet solve it and also stop the frame rocking, which loosens fixings faster.

While the mattress is off, it is worth checking the slat gaps and whether a double or larger has a centre rail with a supporting leg.

How this site works

Nothing here is paid for by a brand. No manufacturer has copy approval, a preview, or the ability to change a score, and where a link earns a commission that never changes a ranking.

Where a brand does not publish a specification, that is stated rather than estimated, because an absent number is itself information. The corrections log and the products I will not recommend page are both public.

Questions people ask

How do I stop my mattress sliding?

Add friction between mattress and base, with non-slip rug underlay cut to size being the cheapest effective fix, or add a physical stop such as battens at the head or foot. Friction suits slatted frames; a stop suits smooth platform bases.

Why does my mattress slide on a divan?

Divans and platform tops are flat with no frame lip, so nothing physically stops movement, and a smooth or dusty deck gives the mattress nothing to grip. Wiping the deck restores a surprising amount of friction.

How do I stop a mattress topper moving?

A deep fitted sheet sized for the mattress and topper together, which works better than corner straps or grip mats because it holds the middle as well as the corners.

Can a sliding mattress mean something is wrong with the bed?

Sometimes. Slats shifting out of position, a frame working loose, or a bed that is not level all cause it, and slat gaps over about 7.5 centimetres cause sagging and void most guarantees.
