A metal frame does several things well. It is rigid for its weight, it takes up less visual space in a small room, it does not warp with humidity, and it is usually cheaper than comparable timber.
The drawback is noise, and it has a specific cause. Metal on metal has nothing to absorb movement. Where a timber joint dampens a small shift, a steel bracket against a steel rail transmits it as sound.
That is a solvable problem rather than a reason to avoid metal, and the fixes cost a few pounds. But it is worth knowing before buying, because it is the complaint metal frames attract.

The noise fixes, in order of effectiveness
All of these are cheap, and between them they resolve most metal frame squeaks.
1. Tighten every bolt. The first and commonest fix. Do it at six months and then annually, because fixings work loose with use.
2. Nylon or rubber washers at metal-to-metal joints. This is the specific fix for metal frames: a washer gives the joint something to compress against instead of steel grinding on steel.
3. Felt or adhesive foam where slats meet the rail. Slats shifting in their brackets is the second commonest source, and a strip of felt under each end stops it.
4. Level the bed. A frame on uneven floorboards rocks with any movement. Felt pads or shims under the legs.
5. Check the mattress is not the source. An older open coil mattress with worn linking wire can creak, and that is not repairable.
Slat spacing applies exactly as it does to wood
7.5 centimetres
Most mattress guarantees require slats no more than about 7.5 centimetres apart. Metal frames are frequently worse for this than timber ones, because sprung metal slats are sometimes spaced widely to save material.
Measure the gaps before buying a mattress to put on it.
If a frame fails the rule, a slat conversion kit or a sheet of plywood cut to size fixes it for a few pounds. Drill ventilation holes in a solid board, since it blocks the airflow slats provide.
Some metal frames use a mesh or sprung wire deck rather than slats. Check the mattress manufacturer's guidance, because a few specify slatted or solid support and exclude mesh.
Where metal is genuinely the better choice
Small rooms. Thin sections take up less visual space than timber of equivalent strength.
Damp or variable rooms. Metal does not warp, swell or split with humidity the way softwood can.
Frequent moves. Metal frames are lighter and their fixings are generally machine threads into metal rather than screws into timber, so they survive repeated assembly better than flat pack board.
Bunk beds and high sleepers. Strength for weight matters most here, which is why most bunk frames are metal. Check the stated maximum mattress depth, usually around 15 centimetres, because a deeper mattress reduces the effective height of the guard rail.
Height, and the thing to measure
Metal frames vary more in deck height than timber ones, from very low platform styles to traditional bedsteads.
Add the deck height to the mattress depth, and aim for 55 to 65 centimetres floor to mattress top, so your feet reach the floor with your knees at roughly a right angle when sitting on the edge. Too low is harder to get out of than too high.
And on a double or larger, a centre rail with a supporting leg is structural. Two at super king width.

A metal frame if a silent bed is the priority and you do not want to felt every contact point.
Any frame with slats more than about 7.5 centimetres apart.

Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
