DreamCloud Bamboo Bed Frame Review

A bed frame made from bamboo, which is a genuinely different proposition from bamboo bedding.

Verdict

7.4/ 10

A bed frame made from bamboo, which is a genuinely different proposition from bamboo bedding. As a fabric, bamboo is a processing question. As a structural material it is a grass that grows to full height in a few years and finishes harder than oak, and the sustainability case is much stronger here than it is on a duvet cover.

Buy it if

Bamboo as furniture is a stronger claim than bamboo as fabric

I have been sceptical about bamboo bedding across this site, so it is worth explaining why furniture is a different case.

Bamboo fabric requires turning a woody stem into a soft fibre, which is chemically intensive. Most bamboo fabric is viscose, produced by a process that typically does not recover its chemicals. The plant is good; the processing is where the environmental case weakens, and brands rarely publish which process they used.

Bamboo furniture uses the material structurally. Strips are laminated and finished, which is closer to making plywood than to making viscose. No chemical conversion of the fibre is involved, so the processing objection largely disappears.

And the growth argument is strong. Bamboo is a grass that reaches harvest height in a few years where a hardwood takes decades, and it regenerates from its root system rather than needing replanting. Properly processed bamboo also finishes harder than many hardwoods, which is why it is used for flooring.

So this is one of the few places where a bamboo claim is straightforwardly good rather than needing a caveat.

Check the slat spacing, as with any frame

The number that protects your mattress guarantee

Most modern mattress guarantees require slats no more than about 7.5 centimetres apart. Wider gaps are a common exclusion and manufacturers do enforce it.

They also cause the problem: the mattress sags between the slats, producing exactly the body impressions the guarantee would have covered.

Buying a frame and mattress from the same brand largely removes this risk, which is the real argument for doing it. If you are pairing this frame with a different mattress, measure the gaps before ordering, and if they are too wide, a sheet of plywood or a slat conversion is a cheap fix compared with an unclaimable mattress.

How long a frame should last

A frame is the longest-lived thing in most bedrooms, or it should be.

Most flat-pack frames use cam locks into particleboard. Cam locks loosen, and particleboard does not hold a screw a second time, so once a joint works loose it tends to stay loose. A creaking bed is almost always a frame problem rather than a mattress one.

A hard material bolted together can be tightened indefinitely. Bamboo is hard, dimensionally stable, and holds a fixing well, which puts it much closer to solid timber than to board in how it ages.

Expect a frame like this to outlast two or three mattresses. Judge the price over that period rather than against the cheapest flat-pack option.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Bamboo is treated as a single sustainability claim across bedding and furniture, and the two uses are very different. Turning bamboo into fabric requires chemical conversion of the fibre, usually by a viscose process that does not recover its chemicals, which is where the environmental case weakens. Using bamboo structurally involves laminating and finishing strips, closer to making plywood, with no fibre conversion at all. The plant's fast growth cycle applies to both; the processing objection applies only to fabric.

Should you buy it?

Yes if you want a hard-wearing frame with an environmental case that holds up under scrutiny, which bamboo's fabric version often does not.

Check the slat spacing before pairing it with a mattress, and check whether it bolts rather than using cam locks. If you need storage instead, see the ottoman base.

Questions people ask

Is bamboo furniture sustainable?

More clearly than bamboo fabric. Making fabric requires chemical conversion of the fibre, usually a viscose process that does not recover its chemicals. Using bamboo structurally means laminating and finishing strips, closer to making plywood, with no fibre conversion at all.

Is a bamboo bed frame strong?

Properly processed bamboo finishes harder than many hardwoods, which is why it is used for flooring. It is dimensionally stable and holds a fixing well, which puts it much closer to solid timber than to particleboard in how it ages.

What should I check on any bed frame?

Slat spacing. Most mattress guarantees require slats no more than about 7.5 centimetres apart, wider gaps are a common exclusion, and they also cause the sagging the guarantee would have covered.
