Best sofa beds

A sofa bed has to fold into a sofa, which caps the mattress depth at a fraction of a real bed's.

I earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page. It never changes what I recommend, and I publish negative verdicts on brands I earn from. Editorial independence.

Every sofa bed is a compromise in one specific place: the mattress has to fold, or roll, or pull out of a cavity, which means it cannot be deep.

A modern hybrid mattress is 28 to 35 centimetres. A sofa bed mattress is typically 10 to 15, because that is what fits inside a sofa.

So the honest way to judge one is as an occasional bed rather than a bed. For a guest a few nights a year, that is entirely reasonable. As someone's permanent bed it is not, and no sofa bed marketing will say so.

What you can change is how much the mattress limitation matters, and a topper does most of that work.

The picks

Emma Sofa Bed, 6.6 / 10. A straightforward mechanism and an honest mattress, judged as occasional sleeping rather than as a bed.

Emma Sofa Bed: Best of the ones reviewed here

Mid range · 6.6 / 10

Scores 6.6, and the score reflects the category rather than the product. The mattress is shallow because it has to be, and the useful questions are the mechanism, the frame and how easy it is to open when a guest is standing in the room.

Buy it if

You need occasional guest sleeping in a room that cannot hold a permanent bed.

Do not buy it if

Someone will sleep on it nightly.

Silentnight Airmax Topper: The purchase that changes it most

Budget to mid · 7.4 / 10

Scores 7.4, and it is on this page because a topper does more for a sofa bed than an expensive sofa bed does. Spacer mesh is mostly air, so it softens the surface without adding much thickness, and it stores flat between uses.

Buy it if

You already have a sofa bed and guests find it hard.

Do not buy it if

The sofa bed mattress has a visible dip or a bar you can feel.

Simba Mattress Topper: Best topper if storage is not an issue

Mid range · 7.5 / 10

The highest scoring topper on this site at 7.5. Micro-springs add real cushioning over a shallow mattress, which is precisely where a sofa bed needs it, and they roll for storage reasonably well.

Buy it if

You can store a topper and want the biggest improvement.

Do not buy it if

Space is tight.

Inofia Tri-Fold Mattress: The alternative to a sofa bed

Budget · 6.5 / 10

A folding mattress stored in a cupboard costs far less than a sofa bed and sleeps better, because it does not have to fold into furniture. If the room does not actually need a sofa, this is worth considering before spending on a mechanism.

Buy it if

You want occasional sleeping and do not need the sofa.

Do not buy it if

You need the seating.

The three mechanisms, and what each costs you

How sofa beds open

Click-clack, back folds flatThe seat cushions themselvesCheapest and least comfortable. Seams where cushions meet.
Pull-out with a separate slatted deckA single unfolded mattressBest sleeping, heaviest and dearest

The third type is the one to look for if guests will actually be sleeping rather than tolerating. A mattress that does not fold has no fold lines and no bar, which are the two things guests notice.

The bar, and how to test for it

The single most common complaint about sofa beds is a metal support bar felt through the mattress across the lower back or hips.

Test it in the shop by lying on it, on your back and on your side, for a few minutes. A bar you can feel in thirty seconds is a bar your guest will feel all night. This is one of the few purchases where trying it in store is genuinely decisive.

If you already own one, a topper of 5 centimetres or more is the practical fix. Below that, you will still feel the bar.

Making an occasional bed genuinely good

The money is better spent below the sofa bed than on it.

A topper, which does more than any mechanism upgrade. Store it rolled in a cupboard and put it on when guests arrive.

Two medium pillows per person. Pillow height depends on shoulder width and sleeping position, and you cannot know a guest's, so a side sleeper stacks them, a back sleeper uses one and a front sleeper pushes both aside.

A protector, because a sofa bed mattress is harder to clean than a normal one and usually cannot be replaced separately.

Proper bedding rather than a spare duvet on top. A fitted sheet that stays on turns an improvised bed into a bed.

Practical checks before buying

Measure the opened footprint, not the sofa. A pull-out needs its full extended length of clear floor, and that is the measurement people forget.

Check who will open it. Metal action mechanisms can be heavy and awkward, and a mechanism that needs two people is a mechanism your guest cannot use alone.

Check the route in. Sofa beds are heavier and less flexible than sofas, and a tight stair turn is a real constraint.

Ask whether the mattress can be replaced. On better sofa beds it can, which extends the life of the whole thing considerably.

What not to do

Buy one as somebody's permanent bed. The mattress depth makes that unreasonable.

Buy without lying on it. The bar is the main failure and it takes two minutes to find.

Buy a click-clack for regular guest use. The seat cushions are the mattress, and the seams sit where you lie.

Measure the sofa rather than the opened bed.

Spend on the sofa bed instead of on a topper. The topper does more.

Also considered, and why they are not here

A roundup is only as useful as what it leaves out, so here is what was assessed and rejected for this list.

Considered and not recommended here
ProductWhy it is not on the list
IKEA Sofa BedScores 6.5. Sensible value and the same category limits apply: judge it as occasional sleeping, and plan for a topper.
Inofia Tri-FoldA folding mattress rather than a sofa bed. Cheaper, sleeps better, and gives you no sofa, which is the trade.
Silentnight Sleep NowFrom £169 for a proper single mattress. If the room can take a day bed or a folding frame, this is a better outcome than any sofa bed mattress.

How this list is made, and who made it

Independence

No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.

Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.

What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.

What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.

What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

See editorial independence, corrections and the author page.

How these were chosen

Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.

A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.

Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.

I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.

Prices move constantly. Judge the cash price on the day rather than any percentage beside it. See every review on this site or where the real savings are.

Questions people ask

Are sofa beds comfortable to sleep on?

As occasional beds, reasonably. The mattress has to fold into a sofa, so it is typically 10 to 15 centimetres against 28 to 35 for a normal mattress. Judge one as a few nights a year rather than as a bed.

Why can I feel a bar in a sofa bed?

Metal action mechanisms have support bars beneath a thin folding mattress. Test by lying on it in the shop for a few minutes: a bar you feel in thirty seconds is one your guest feels all night. A topper of 5 centimetres or more is the practical fix.

What is the best type of sofa bed mechanism?

A pull-out with a separate slatted deck and a mattress that does not fold, because it has no fold lines and no bar. It is the heaviest and dearest type, and it is the one to look for if guests will genuinely be sleeping.

How do I make a sofa bed more comfortable?

A topper does more than any mechanism upgrade, stored rolled in a cupboard between uses. Then two medium pillows per person, a protector, and a fitted sheet that stays on.
