Verdict

6.6/ 10

A sofa bed from a mattress company, which ought to mean a better mattress than the category usually manages. The honest framing is that every sofa bed is a compromise dictated by the folding mechanism, and the useful thing is understanding which compromise you are buying.

Buy it if

You need occasional guest sleeping and a sofa in the same room, and you accept it will not match a real bed.

Avoid it if

Someone will sleep on it regularly. A sofa bed is for occasional use and the mechanism makes that unavoidable.

Why every sofa bed is a compromise

This is the thing to understand before comparing any of them.

A sofa bed mattress has to fold, usually in two or three places, and then fit inside the body of a sofa. That sets a hard limit on depth: typically a fraction of what a bed mattress uses.

A shallow mattress cannot contain a support core. There is no room for a spring unit of useful height, so what you get is foam, and usually not much of it. Everything else about the sofa bed follows from that constraint.

The second problem is what the mattress sits on. Most mechanisms use a sprung or mesh deck with a supporting bar across it. On cheaper sofa beds you can feel that bar through the mattress, which is the single most common complaint about sleeping on one.

So when comparing sofa beds, the two questions are: how deep is the mattress, and can you feel the frame through it. Lie on it in the shop, folded out, for a proper few minutes.

The twenty pound fix

Buy a topper with it

A thin foam or wool topper, rolled and stored nearby, transforms most sofa beds for very little money.

It adds the depth the mechanism could not allow and it puts a layer between your guest and any bar in the deck. It also costs a fraction of the difference between a mid-range and a premium sofa bed.

If you are choosing between a better sofa bed and a cheaper one plus a topper, the second option is usually the better night's sleep.

Note that a memory foam topper will make a guest warmer, as it would on any mattress. In a living room that doubles as a guest room, often without the ventilation of a bedroom, that matters more than usual. A wool topper is the better choice here.

Why nobody should sleep on one for months

Sofa beds are occasionally used as a long-term sleeping solution, in a house share, during a renovation, or after a relationship ends. It is worth saying plainly that this is a bad idea.

A shallow folding mattress cannot provide support over months. The fold lines become permanent weak points, the foam is too thin to distribute load, and the deck underneath is not designed for nightly use.

If someone needs a bed for more than a few weeks, a cheap proper mattress on the floor is genuinely better for their back than a good sofa bed. Silentnight's Sleep Now range starts at £169 and will do more for them than any sofa bed at any price.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Sofa beds are compared on mattress quality as though the manufacturer's choices are what separate them, and the binding constraint is the folding mechanism. The mattress must fold in two or three places and fit inside the sofa body, which caps the depth well below what a support core requires. No sofa bed at any price contains a mattress comparable to a bed mattress, and the meaningful comparisons are the depth achieved and whether the deck frame is felt through it.

Should you buy it?

Yes for occasional guests, which is what a sofa bed is for. Buy a rollable topper at the same time and store it nearby: it will do more for your guests than spending another two hundred pounds on the sofa bed itself.

If anyone is going to sleep on it for more than a few weeks, buy them a real mattress instead, even a cheap one.

Questions people ask

Why are sofa beds uncomfortable?

The mattress must fold in two or three places and fit inside the sofa body, which caps the depth well below what a support core needs. Most mechanisms also use a deck with a supporting bar, and feeling that bar through a thin mattress is the most common complaint.

How do I make a sofa bed more comfortable?

Buy a rollable topper and store it nearby. It adds the depth the mechanism could not allow and puts a layer between your guest and any bar in the deck, for a fraction of the difference between a mid-range and a premium sofa bed.

Can someone sleep on a sofa bed long term?

No. The fold lines become permanent weak points, the foam is too thin to distribute load, and the deck is not designed for nightly use. A cheap proper mattress on the floor is genuinely better for someone's back than a good sofa bed.
