Verdict

6.5/ 10

A folding foam mattress for guests, floors and spare rooms, and it is worth understanding that a tri-fold is a storage product first and a mattress second. Judged as a guest bed it is good. Judged as a mattress it has a fold line down it.

Buy it if

You need occasional guest sleeping and you have nowhere to keep a spare bed.

Avoid it if

Someone will sleep on it regularly. Fold lines become permanent weak points.

Fold lines and shallow foam. Not a sleeping surface for months.

Fold lines are the trade

A tri-fold mattress has two hinge points, and foam at a hinge compresses differently from foam anywhere else.

Over time those lines become permanent. The foam at the fold loses loft faster than the panels either side, so the mattress develops two soft ridges running across it. On a mattress used a dozen nights a year that takes a long time to matter. On one slept on nightly it happens within months.

The practical mitigation: store it flat if you have anywhere to do so, or unfold it occasionally between uses. Storing it folded under tension is what accelerates the problem.

Sleeping on the floor, and the thing nobody mentions

Ventilation underneath

A mattress flat on a floor has no airflow beneath it. An adult loses a meaningful amount of moisture overnight through breathing and perspiration, and that moisture has to go somewhere.

On a slatted bed it disperses downward. On a floor, especially a cold or solid floor, it condenses underneath where you cannot see it. Mould can follow within weeks.

Stand it up to air between uses. If it is being used for more than a couple of nights, lift it and air the floor daily. This applies to any mattress on any floor, not just this one.

If guests stay often, the last row is worth the space it takes. If they stay three times a year, a tri-fold is the sensible answer and considerably better than an airbed.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Folding and tri-fold mattresses are reviewed against ordinary mattresses on comfort and depth, which misses what they are for. The fold is the product: two hinge points where the foam compresses differently and loses loft faster than the panels either side, which becomes permanent over time. That is an acceptable trade on a mattress used occasionally and a genuine failure mode on one slept on nightly.

Should you buy it?

Yes for occasional guests, and it is a better answer than an airbed or a cheap sofa bed for a few nights a year.

Store it flat if you can, stand it up to air between uses, and if anyone is going to sleep on it for more than a few weeks buy them a real mattress instead. Silentnight's Sleep Now range starts at £169.

Questions people ask

Are tri-fold mattresses any good?

As a guest solution, yes. As a mattress, they have two hinge points where the foam compresses differently and loses loft faster than the panels either side, and those lines become permanent. Fine for a dozen nights a year, a failure mode if slept on nightly.

Is it bad to put a mattress on the floor?

There is no airflow beneath it, and an adult loses meaningful moisture overnight. On a slatted bed it disperses downward; on a floor it condenses underneath where you cannot see it and mould can follow within weeks. Stand it up to air between uses.
