Origin Storage Bed Frame Review

Verdict

7.5/ 10

A storage bed, and the useful thing here is the comparison nobody lays out: ottoman lift, drawers and open under-bed space solve different problems and suit different rooms. Choosing wrong is expensive and hard to undo.

Buy it if

You need storage, you have measured the ceiling clearance and lift direction, and you will store things you rarely need.

Avoid it if

You need daily access to what is under the bed. An ottoman is the wrong choice for that.

The rule: ottoman for things you need twice a year, drawers for things you need weekly. Putting everyday clothes in an ottoman means lifting a mattress every morning, which nobody does for long.

Spare bedding, suitcases, seasonal clothes and Christmas decorations are ottoman contents. Socks are not.

Three measurements before you order

Get these wrong and it is hard to undo

Lift direction. Ottomans lift from the end or from the side. A side-lift bed against a wall cannot open. Check which way this one lifts and which way your room allows.

Ceiling clearance. The mattress rotates upward through roughly its own length. Sloped ceilings, loft rooms and low light fittings are where this fails.

Strut rating against mattress weight. Gas struts are rated for a weight range. A 35 centimetre hybrid can be 50 kilograms or more, and struts sized for a lighter mattress will not hold the platform up safely.

That last one is the most commonly missed, and it matters because mattresses have got considerably deeper and heavier over the last decade while frame specifications have not always followed.

And the check that applies to any frame

Most modern mattress guarantees require slats no more than about 7.5 centimetres apart. Wider gaps are a common exclusion, and they cause the sagging the guarantee would have covered.

Buying frame and mattress from one brand largely removes that risk. If you are pairing this with a different mattress, measure the gaps before ordering.

One extra consideration on a storage bed: a solid or closely boarded base restricts airflow beneath the mattress compared with an open slatted frame. In a damp room, ventilate occasionally by lifting the platform and leaving it open for an hour.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Storage beds are compared on capacity, and the variable that decides whether one works is access frequency. An ottoman uses the entire footprint and requires lifting the mattress to reach anything, which suits items needed twice a year and not items needed daily. Drawers hold less and open in seconds. Choosing an ottoman for everyday clothing means lifting a mattress every morning, which nobody sustains.

Should you buy it?

Yes if you need volume for things you rarely use, and you have checked the lift direction, the ceiling clearance and the strut rating against your mattress weight.

If you need daily access, buy drawers instead. And ventilate the space occasionally, because a closed base restricts airflow beneath the mattress.

Questions people ask

Should I get an ottoman bed or drawers?

Ottoman for things you need twice a year, drawers for things you need weekly. An ottoman uses the whole footprint but you lift the mattress each time, and nobody sustains that for everyday clothes.

What should I measure before buying an ottoman bed?

Lift direction, because a side-lift bed against a wall cannot open. Ceiling clearance, because the mattress rotates upward through roughly its own length. And the strut rating against your mattress weight, which is the most commonly missed.
