A divan is an upholstered box base that the mattress sits on, usually with castors or legs and frequently with drawers. Most beds sold through British bed shops are divans.
The decision people skip is the base type, and it changes the feel of the mattress considerably.
Platform top is a solid or near-solid deck. It supports evenly and makes the mattress feel firmer, and it blocks airflow underneath.
Sprung edge has a spring unit in the base itself. It flexes with the mattress, makes it feel softer, and absorbs some of the wear the mattress would otherwise take.
So the same mattress on two different divans is two different beds.

If you are between two firmness options, the base decides it: a medium mattress on a platform top behaves close to a firm one, and a firm mattress on a sprung edge softens noticeably.
Ask which type a showroom model is sitting on before judging how the mattress feels. It is a common reason a mattress feels different at home.
The airflow problem, and what to do about it
A solid platform blocks air under the mattress. In a damp room, or under a foam mattress, that is where condensation forms against the underside, and it is the most common cause of mould on a mattress base.
Lift and air the mattress periodically, particularly in winter and in rooms that are not heated. Standing it on its side for an hour with a window open is enough.
A sprung edge base breathes better. So do slatted frames, which is the honest argument for choosing one over a divan if storage is not the reason you are buying.
Drawers, and the thing to measure
Most divans are sold with drawer options: two drawers, four drawers, or continental drawers on one side.
Measure the clearance beside the bed before choosing the configuration. A drawer needs its own depth of clear floor to open, and in a small room the side against the wall cannot be the drawer side.
On thick carpet, drawers run poorly. Divans with castors sit higher and clear the carpet better than those with low glides, which is worth checking rather than assuming.
And check the finished bed height: base height plus mattress depth. Aim for 55 to 65 centimetres floor to mattress top, so your feet reach the floor with your knees at roughly a right angle. Modern hybrids run 28 to 35 centimetres, which pushes a divan higher than people expect.
Two things worth knowing about how divans are sold
Bases and mattresses are frequently sold as a set, and the set price can obscure how much of your money is going to each. Ask for the mattress price alone. If the mattress is not offered separately, that is information in itself.
Exclusive lines are common. The big chains sell mattresses made for them under their own names, so you cannot price-check the exact model elsewhere. Take the specification away rather than the name: depth, spring count for your size, pocketed or linked springs, and firmness. Those four travel between retailers.
What not to do
Judge a mattress in a showroom without asking what base it is on.
Buy a platform top for a foam mattress in a damp room without planning to air it.
Choose the drawer side before measuring the room.
Buy a set without asking the mattress price alone.
Assume a deep mattress will sit at a comfortable height on a divan. Add the two numbers.

What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
