Origin Hybrid Mattress Review

On paper this is the most mattress per pound sold in the UK. It also sleeps firmer than Origin says, and it comes from a company most people have never heard of.

Verdict

8.0/ 10From £265 UK single, direct

On paper this is the most mattress per pound sold in the UK. Twenty-six centimetres, six layers, up to 3,000 pocket springs and five support zones from 265 pounds. It also sleeps firmer than Origin says it does, and it comes from a company most people have never heard of.

Buy it if

You are buying on value, you sleep on your back or front, and you are comfortable buying from a smaller brand with a long trial.

Avoid it if

You want to lie on one before buying, or you are a light side sleeper. Independent testing puts this well above its claimed 6.5 firmness.

The scores

Overall
8 / 10

Outstanding specification for the money, from a company you have to take on trust.

Value
10 / 10

Nothing in the UK gives you this much construction at this price. Nothing close.

Support
8 / 10

Up to 3,000 springs across five zones at 26cm is a serious support core.

Temperature
8 / 10

Tencel cover over a deep spring layer. Runs cool.

Edge support
7 / 10

Decent. Origin does not make the reinforced-perimeter claims Otty does.

Motion isolation
7 / 10

Individually pocketed springs do the job without being exceptional.

Trial and guarantee
9 / 10

200 days is longer than Emma, Simba and Otty. It matters more here.

The value argument, made properly

Set the Origin Hybrid against what else 265 pounds buys and the comparison is not close.

Origin gives you the most depth, the most springs and the only stated zoning, at the lowest price. I have gone looking for the catch in the materials and it is not there. The difference is that Emma and Simba spend enormous sums on marketing and retail distribution and Origin does not.

It is firmer than Origin says

Origin rates this medium firm. Tom's Guide, having slept on one, rated it 8 out of 10. That is firm rather than medium firm, and it matters.

This is a recurring problem across the whole category and not a mark against Origin specifically. Manufacturer firmness ratings are self-reported, there is no common scale between brands, and a 6.5 from one brand can feel firmer than a 7.5 from another.

What it means practically: the Origin Hybrid is an excellent choice for back and front sleepers, who need the hips held up. Light side sleepers should be cautious, because a firm surface does not let the shoulder sink and that is where side sleepers get shoulder pain.

If you are a light side sleeper and you want the Origin value proposition, the Hybrid Pro at 31 cm with more comfort layers above the springs is the better fit.

Buying from a smaller company, honestly assessed

Origin Sleep UK Ltd is company number 13540955, registered at a correspondence address in Covent Garden. It has no UK retail presence, so you cannot lie on one before buying, and if the mattress is wrong you are entirely dependent on the returns process working.

What reassures me: over 2,300 Trustpilot reviews at 4.1, with more than 1,300 of those in the last twelve months. That is an active, recent record rather than a thin one, and the volume is high enough that a systematic returns problem would show.

What does not reassure me: Origin advertises over 100 awards worldwide, and award density at that level tells you about a marketing department rather than a mattress. The specification speaks for itself. The badges make it look like it cannot.

The 200 day trial is the thing that makes this a reasonable risk. It is longer than Emma's 200 nights, Simba's 200 and Otty's 100, and with a smaller brand a long trial is worth more, not less.

The free pillow, and what it is worth

Origin bundles a free pillow with the Hybrid, two with the Hybrid Pro, and four items with the LumbarCloud, stating values up to 493 pounds.

Treat the stated value the way you treat any brand's accessory pricing, which is sceptically. But a decent pillow is worth having and costs real money to buy separately, and the mattress protector in the larger bundles is the single cheapest thing you can do to protect a future guarantee claim. Value the bundle at roughly a third of its stated worth and it is still a better deal than most brands' percentage discounts.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Several UK sources state that the Origin Hybrid is the brand's only mattress in this country and that the Hybrid Pro is available only in Australia and Singapore. That is out of date. Origin's UK site currently sells three mattresses: the Hybrid at 265 pounds, the Hybrid Pro at 374 pounds and the LumbarCloud at 797 pounds, alongside pillows, a topper, a protector and two bed frames. If a review tells you the Hybrid is the only option here, it has not been checked recently.

Should you buy it?

If you are choosing on value and you sleep on your back or front, this is the best purchase on this site. Nothing else gives you 26 cm and up to 3,000 zoned springs at 265 pounds.

If you need to lie on a mattress before committing, or you are a light side sleeper, look elsewhere. And if the idea of a smaller brand bothers you, the Otty Original Hybrid gives you a similar proposition with a longer UK track record for about two hundred pounds more.

Origin is what Simba would cost if Simba did not need to be famous.

Questions people ask

Is the Origin Hybrid any good?

On specification it is outstanding. Twenty-six centimetres, six layers, up to 3,000 pocket springs and five support zones from 265 pounds, which is more depth, more spring and more zoning than anything else at that price in the UK. The trade-off is a smaller company with no shops.

Is the Origin Hybrid firm?

Firmer than Origin says. Origin rates it medium firm and Tom's Guide, having slept on one, rated it 8 out of 10. That makes it an excellent choice for back and front sleepers and a cautious one for light side sleepers, who may find the shoulder does not sink enough.

Is Origin a trustworthy brand?

Origin Sleep UK Ltd has over 2,300 Trustpilot reviews at 4.1, with more than 1,300 in the last twelve months, which is an active rather than a thin record. There is no UK retail presence, so the 200 day trial is doing the work a shop would otherwise do.

Does Origin sell more than one mattress in the UK?

Yes. Several UK reviews say the Hybrid is Origin's only UK model and that is out of date. Origin currently sells the Hybrid at 265 pounds, the Hybrid Pro at 374 pounds and the LumbarCloud at 797 pounds, plus pillows, a topper, a protector and bed frames.
