A day bed is a frame with a back and sides, used as seating by day and a bed at night. At single width that works well. At double width it frequently does not.
The reason is depth. A single day bed is about 90 centimetres deep, which is roughly the depth of a generous sofa. A double is 135 centimetres deep, which is far deeper than anything anyone sits on, so you cannot reach the back rail without climbing onto it.
That makes a double day bed a bed with a back rail rather than seating, and it needs a wall long enough for a 190 centimetre frame plus the projection of the ends.
Where it genuinely works: a spare room that doubles as a snug, a large landing, or a garden room, where the point is a comfortable place to lie down rather than a place for several people to sit.

Why depth breaks the seating idea

A typical sofa seat depth is around 55 to 60 centimetres, which is why a 135 centimetre platform reads as a bed however it is dressed.
Bolster cushions are not optional at this size. A row of deep bolsters along the back brings the effective seat depth forward to something usable, and without them a double day bed is a mattress against a wall.
Measure the wall, not the bed
Length. A double is 190 centimetres, and the scrolled or panelled ends project beyond that, frequently by 15 to 25 centimetres in total. Measure the external frame.
Projection into the room. At 135 centimetres deep plus a back rail, a double day bed occupies more floor than most sofas.
Access. Day bed frames have three fixed sides and do not reduce much for delivery. Check doorways and stair turns.
Clearance to walk past. Seventy-five centimetres is comfortable; below about 60 the room stops working.
What to consider instead
Two single day beds, at right angles or facing, which gives the same sleeping capacity, real seating at both, and far more flexibility. This is usually the better answer in a room that has to do two jobs.
A single day bed with a trundle, which sleeps two and seats one properly. Check the under-frame clearance, because the trundle mattress depth is capped by it, usually around 15 centimetres, and the two beds will not be level unless it pops up.
A sofa bed, if the daytime job is genuinely seating for several people. The mattress is limited to what folds inside, typically 10 to 15 centimetres.
A plain double bed and a chair, which is frequently the honest answer and costs less than any of the above.
The mattress rules at this size
Firm rather than plush. A day bed gets sat on at the edge constantly, and the edge is where mattresses fail first. Soft mattresses sag there fastest.
Pocket springs if two people share, because linked springs move as one surface.
Check the slat spacing, no more than about 7.5 centimetres, and on a double a centre rail with a supporting leg, which day bed frames sometimes omit because they were designed around a single.
Deep fitted sheets sized to the actual depth, because tucking is awkward between three fixed sides and a sheet that grips matters more here.
What not to do
Buy one expecting sofa-like seating. At 135 centimetres deep it is a bed.
Skip the bolsters. They are what make the back rail reachable.
Buy a deep hybrid mattress. It buries the back rail.
Buy a soft mattress. The edge is where you sit and where it fails.
Assume there is a centre rail. Day bed frames are often scaled up from singles.

What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
