A footstool bed is an upholstered stool that unfolds into a single bed. It is the most compact convertible made, and it is the most compromised.
The arithmetic is unavoidable. A sofa bed folds a mattress once. A chair bed folds it into three. A footstool bed folds a single mattress into three sections inside a footprint smaller than an armchair, which means very thin foam, typically 6 to 10 centimetres, and two hinge lines under the sleeper.
So it is a bed for one or two nights, for one person, in a room that has nowhere else for a bed to go.
Within that, it does something no other product does: it disappears completely into a piece of furniture you would have anyway.

The second row catches people. A footstool bed that unfolds to 180 centimetres is short for most adults, and standard single bedding will not fit it properly either.
If it unfolds onto the floor
Many footstool beds have no frame under the unfolded sections, which puts the sleeper effectively on the floor with a few centimetres of foam.
That brings the floor problems with it. A cold solid floor takes heat out of you, and thin foam is not much insulation, so a guest will be colder than they expect even in a warm room.
Two cheap fixes: a rug underneath, and a folded blanket under the sheet, which does more than another blanket on top because the heat is leaving downward.
And air it after use. A mattress that folds back into a closed stool while slightly damp is a mattress that develops a smell, and foam holds moisture where a spring layer would not.
Making it a decent night
The bed is fixed. The rest is not, and the rest is cheap.
A topper, which does more than any upgrade to the stool. Store it rolled inside or beside it.
Two medium pillows, because you are buying for someone whose shoulder width and sleeping position you do not know: a side sleeper stacks them, a front sleeper pushes both aside.
A fitted sheet that actually fits, measured rather than assumed, because a loose sheet on a folding surface bunches straight into the hinge lines.
A 7 to 10.5 tog duvet and a spare blanket, so a cold guest can add warmth without asking.
When it is the right answer
A studio or one-bedroom flat with no cupboard and no spare room, where a guest arrives twice a year. This is the situation the product exists for and nothing else does it.
A child staying over, where length and depth matter far less.
A room that already needs a footstool, so the bed is effectively free floor area.
When it is not: regular guests, anyone tall, anyone staying more than a night or two, and anyone who struggles to get up from low down. For those, almost anything else on this site is better.
What not to do
Judge it by sitting on it. Unfold it and lie down.
Assume it is single bed length. Many are well under 190 centimetres.
Use it for a guest staying a week.
Fold it away damp. Thin foam in a closed stool develops a smell.
Skip the topper. It does more than anything else you can do.

What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
