Best summer duvets
The most effective cooling technology in bedding is using less duvet, and it costs the least.

Every cooling claim in bedding sits on top of one basic variable: how much thermal resistance you are lying under. Tog measures exactly that, and reducing it works better than any treatment applied to a warmer duvet.
British summers make this awkward, because a night can be 12 degrees or 22. A 4.5 tog duvet is right for the second and leaves you cold on the first, which is why so many people end up with two duvets and neither is right.
Seven to 10.5 tog covers most modern UK bedrooms year round, including summer. A dedicated 4.5 tog duvet is for genuinely warm rooms, top floors and heatwaves, and it is worth owning alongside rather than instead.
The picks
The pick, if you want one answer
Simba Hybrid 3-in-1 Duvet, 7.8 / 10. Two duvets that separate, so the summer layer is a genuinely light duvet rather than a mid-weight one sold as cool.
| Product | Best for | From | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simba Hybrid 3-in-1 Duvet | Best overall | Mid range | 7.8 / 10 |
| Panda Cloud Bamboo Duvet | Best for clamminess | Mid range | 7.4 / 10 |
| Night Lark | Best washable | Budget to mid | 7.6 / 10 |
| Scooms | Best light down | Premium | 8.0 / 10 |
Simba Hybrid 3-in-1 Duvet: Best overall
Mid range · 7.8 / 10
Scores 7.8. The summer half is a properly light duvet rather than a mid-weight one marketed as cooling, and the two halves cover the awkward middle of a British year between them.
Buy it if
You want a genuinely light summer duvet without owning two separate ones.
Do not buy it if
You want the simplest possible bedding.

Panda Cloud Bamboo Duvet: Best for clamminess
Mid range · 7.4 / 10
Scores 7.4. Moisture management rather than temperature. A duvet that moves moisture away feels cooler because it feels drier, and damp fabric against skin feels warm whatever the air temperature.
Buy it if
You wake up damp rather than hot, which is the more common complaint.
Do not buy it if
You want maximum loft.

Night Lark: Best washable
Budget to mid · 7.6 / 10
Scores 7.6. A coverless duvet goes straight in the machine, which matters in summer specifically: a duvet absorbing moisture every night needs washing far more often than most people manage with a cover-and-duvet setup.
Buy it if
You sweat at night and want something you can wash often.
Do not buy it if
You want to change the look of the bed.

Scooms: Best light down
Premium · 8.0 / 10
The highest scoring duvet on this site at 8.0. High fill power down gives the same warmth for less weight, and a light 7 tog down duvet feels considerably cooler than a heavy synthetic one at the same tog.
Buy it if
You want warmth with as little weight as possible on warm nights.
Do not buy it if
Anyone in the house has a down allergy.
Change these before buying a duvet
| Change | Rough cost |
|---|---|
| Cotton or lyocell pillowcase instead of polyester | £10 to £20 |
| Cotton percale or linen duvet cover | £30 to £60 |
| Drop a tog step | £30 to £80 |
| Breathable mattress protector instead of plastic-backed | £20 to £40 |
| Two single duvets instead of one shared | Cost of one duvet |
The protector row catches more people than expected. A cheap plastic-backed mattress protector stops air as well as liquid, which is the most common reason someone buys a hybrid mattress for temperature and cannot understand why the bed still sleeps warm.
What tog for a British summer
| Bedroom | Summer tog |
|---|---|
| Top floor, south facing, or a loft conversion | 2.5 to 4.5 |
| Typical modern UK bedroom | 4.5 to 7 |
| Cool room, solid walls, north facing | 7 to 10.5 all year |
If you own one duvet, 7 tog is the most useful single choice in most of Britain: light enough for all but the warmest nights and workable in winter with a blanket over it.
Adding a removable layer beats owning two duvets, because a blanket can come off at 2am and a duvet swap cannot.
The cover matters more than the duvet
You are not sleeping under the duvet. You are sleeping under the duvet cover, and a polyester one insulates while holding moisture against your skin.
Cotton percale is crisp, matte and cool, and it is the hotel feel people usually mean. Linen handles moisture best of any common fibre and is the most breathable. Lyocell and bamboo viscose are smooth and move moisture well.
Any of those costs a fraction of a duvet and changes more than the fill does.
If one of you is hot and the other is not
Tog is per duvet, not per person, so any shared number is wrong for one of you every night.
Two single duvets, one each, is standard across Scandinavia. Each person gets the warmth they want, duvet stealing becomes impossible, and one person's movement stops dragging the covers off the other. It costs about the same as one good duvet and it is the most effective purchase on this page for a couple.
What not to buy
A cooling duvet at 13.5 tog. The tog is doing more than the technology.
A cooling duvet under a polyester cover. You have insulated it.
A 4.5 tog duvet as your only duvet, unless your room is genuinely warm year round.
A single compromise tog for two people who disagree.
A new mattress for heat before changing the duvet, the cover and the protector. All three are more likely to be the cause.
Also considered, and why they are not here
A roundup is only as useful as what it leaves out, so here is what was assessed and rejected for this list.
| Product | Why it is not on the list |
|---|---|
| Simba Duvet | Scores 7.4. A sound single-season duvet, and the 3-in-1 from the same brand gives a genuinely light summer layer for not much more. |
| Emma Cloud Duvet | Scores 6.9. Comfortable and priced above what the specification justifies against the alternatives here. |
| Any 13.5 tog duvet used in summer | Not a product but a habit. In a modern British bedroom it is the most common cause of waking up hot, and no cooling technology compensates for it. |
How this list is made, and who made it
Independence
No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.
Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.
What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
Prices move constantly. Judge the cash price on the day rather than any percentage beside it. See every review on this site or where the real savings are.
Questions people ask
What tog duvet is best for summer in the UK?
Four and a half to 7 tog in a typical modern bedroom, and 2.5 to 4.5 in a top floor or loft room. If you own one duvet, 7 tog is the most useful single choice, light enough for most nights and workable in winter with a blanket over it.
Do cooling duvets work?
Once the tog is right, they help with clamminess rather than temperature, which is what most people are actually describing. The largest effect comes from using less duvet, not from a treatment applied to a warmer one.
Why am I still hot with a summer duvet?
Most often the duvet cover or the mattress protector. A polyester cover insulates and holds moisture, and a cheap plastic-backed protector stops air as well as liquid and seals off the mattress underneath.
Should couples have separate summer duvets?
If one of you runs hot and the other cold, yes. Tog is per duvet rather than per person, so any shared number is wrong for one of you every night, and two singles cost about the same as one good duvet.
