Best bunk beds with a desk

A desk under a bed usually has a bed frame at head height, which is the measurement that decides whether it gets used.

I earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page. It never changes what I recommend, and I publish negative verdicts on brands I earn from. Editorial independence.

A high sleeper with a desk beneath it is the best use of floor area in a small bedroom, and it fails in a predictable way: the desk is unusable and becomes storage.

Three things cause that, and all three are measurable before you buy.

Headroom. The underside of the bed sits above the desk. If it is low, anyone sitting upright is under a ceiling at head height, which is oppressive rather than merely inconvenient.

Light. A bed above a desk blocks the room's ceiling light completely, so the desk sits in permanent shadow unless you add lighting into the structure.

Depth. Many built-in desks are shallow, and a monitor plus a keyboard needs about 60 centimetres of depth to work.

The guard rail and weight rules of any bunk apply as well, unchanged.

The picks

The pick, if you want one answer

Simba Hybrid Kids Mattress, 7.6 / 10. A shallow mattress with real spring structure, which is what a high sleeper's depth limit demands.

Simba Hybrid Kids Mattress: Best for a child or teenager

Mid range · 7.6 / 10

Scores 7.6. Check the depth against the frame's stated maximum, which exists because guard rail height is measured from the top of the mattress, not from the deck.

Buy it if

The bed is for a child and you need a shallow mattress.

Do not buy it if

An adult sleeps on it.

Rem-Fit Kids Mattress: Best value

Budget to mid · 7.5 / 10

Scores 7.5. Rem-Fit's eligibility schemes cover key workers, seniors and students, which can move the price more than the specification gap at this end of the market.

Buy it if

You want a sensible children's specification at a lower price.

Do not buy it if

You need the absolute lowest price.

Silentnight Sleep Now Range: Cheapest sensible option

From £169 · 6.7 / 10

From a manufacturer trading since 1946. At shallow depths firm works better than soft, because there is less material between the sleeper and the deck.

Buy it if

You need a shallow mattress from a manufacturer that will still exist.

Do not buy it if

You want depth. A high sleeper will not take it.

Panda Kids Bamboo Pillow: Cheapest real improvement

Budget to mid · 7.5 / 10

Scores 7.5. An adult pillow holds a small neck in flexion all night, because a child's shoulders create a much smaller gap, and it costs less than anything else on this page to fix.

Buy it if

A child sleeps up there on an adult pillow.

Do not buy it if

The sleeper is adult sized.

Measure these four things

What decides whether the desk gets used
MeasurementWhat to aim for
Floor to underside of the bedEnough to sit upright without ducking. Measure the person, sitting.
Desk depthAround 60cm for a monitor and keyboard. Many built-ins are far less.
Desk width and legroomFrame uprights frequently intrude at knee height
Ceiling to top of the mattressEnough to sit up in bed without hitting the ceiling

The simplest test: have the person sit at a normal desk and measure from the floor to the top of their head, then add a few centimetres. If the underside of the bed is below that, they will duck, and a desk you duck at is a desk you stop using.

Lighting is not optional

The bed above the desk blocks the ceiling light entirely, so the desk sits in its own shadow from the start. Adding a lamp on the desk eats the depth you already do not have.

What works: a clamp lamp on the frame upright, or an LED strip fixed to the underside of the bed deck, which lights the whole surface and takes no desk space at all.

Two practical points. Route cables away from the ladder and the sleeping area, clipped to the frame rather than hanging. And check where the room's socket is before deciding which way round the bed goes, because an extension lead trailing across a bedroom floor is worse than a poorly placed desk.

The question worth asking about a desk under a bed

This site's position on bedrooms is evidence-led, and the evidence favours the bed being associated with sleep and not much else.

That association is the basis of stimulus control, which sits at the heart of the evidence-based treatment for insomnia: if bed reliably means sleep, lying down triggers the wind-down. A workstation directly beneath the bed works against that, particularly for a teenager working late.

It is still frequently the right choice, because a small room with nowhere to work is its own problem. The mitigation is separation of use rather than of space: finish work, turn the desk lamp off, and light the room differently for the last hour.

The bunk rules still apply

Guard rails on all four sides of the sleeping deck, including where the ladder meets it, and compliance with BS EN 747, the UK bunk bed standard.

The stated maximum mattress depth, which is a rail height calculation rather than a preference, and no topper, which raises the sleeping surface.

Not for children under six on the upper deck, and check the manufacturer's stated minimum age.

Slat spacing no more than about 7.5 centimetres, and tighten every fixing at six months and then twice a year, because a creaking high sleeper is a loosened joint.

What not to do

Buy without measuring seated head height. A desk you duck at goes unused.

Rely on the ceiling light. The bed blocks it completely.

Exceed the stated mattress depth, or add a topper. Both reduce the rail height.

Trail an extension lead across the room. Check the socket position first.

Put a child under six on the upper deck.

Also considered, and why they are not here

A roundup is only as useful as what it leaves out, so here is what was assessed and rejected for this list.

Considered and not recommended here
ProductWhy it is not on the list
Emma Original LiteExcellent at £199, and check the depth against the frame's stated maximum before assuming it fits a high sleeper.
Mlily Memory Gel 200Scores 5.5. Shallow foam suits the depth limit, and no published density means no way to judge how long it lasts.
Simba Hybrid Cot BedFor a cot rather than a high sleeper. Cot mattresses follow safer sleep guidance, which is a separate set of rules.
Origin Hybrid ProThe highest scoring mattress here at 8.4, and far too deep for any bunk frame.

How this list is made, and who made it

Independence

No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.

Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.

What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.

What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.

What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

See editorial independence, corrections and the author page.

How these were chosen

Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.

A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.

Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.

I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.

Prices move constantly. Judge the cash price on the day rather than any percentage beside it. See every review on this site or where the real savings are.

Questions people ask

How much headroom does a desk under a bunk bed need?

Enough to sit upright without ducking. Have the person sit at a normal desk, measure from the floor to the top of their head and add a few centimetres, then check the underside of the bed clears it.

Do I need extra lighting for a bunk bed desk?

Yes. The bed above blocks the room's ceiling light entirely, so the desk sits in permanent shadow. A clamp lamp on a frame upright or an LED strip under the bed deck lights it without eating desk depth.

What mattress depth fits a high sleeper?

Whatever the frame states as its maximum. The limit exists because guard rail height is measured from the top of the mattress, so extra depth reduces the effective rail. A topper cannot be added for the same reason.

Is a desk under a bed bad for sleep?

It works against the association between bed and sleep that stimulus control depends on, particularly for someone working late. The mitigation is separating the uses: finish work, turn the desk lamp off, and light the room differently for the last hour.
