Mlily Memory Gel 200 Review

The cheapest tier of Mlily's foam range, with no springs in it despite a number that looks like a spring count.

Verdict

5.5/ 10

The cheapest tier of Mlily's foam range, with no springs in it despite a number that looks like a spring count. At this end of the market the question is not which foam mattress is best but whether foam is the right thing to buy at all.

Buy it if

You need the cheapest possible mattress for occasional use and you understand there are no springs in it.

Avoid it if

It is a main bed, or you assumed the 200 meant springs. Both matter.

Decoding the range

The number is the spring count, except in the foam ranges

In Mlily's Gel, Deluxe, Premier, Supreme and Haluna collections, the number is the spring count in a king size. In the Memory and Memory Gel collections there are no springs at all and the number is a tier marker.

At this price, springs are available

The strongest argument against a cheap foam mattress is not that foam is bad. It is that sprung mattresses exist at the same money.

Silentnight's Sleep Now range starts at 169 pounds from a manufacturer making beds in Barnoldswick since 1946. Emma's Original Lite at 199 has a three-zone pocket spring layer and a 200 night trial. Inofia's Elegant at around 210 gives you 27 centimetres and a spring core.

All three give you a structure that moves air and does not develop body impressions the way low density foam does.

The number nobody publishes

With no springs to compare, the way to judge a foam mattress is density, measured in kilograms per cubic metre. Standard memory foam runs from around 16 to 80, with decent comfort layers between 48 and 72.

It is the best available predictor of how long a foam mattress holds its shape: low density foam can develop body impressions within three to five years, high density holds considerably longer.

Foam cost is dominated by density, which is exactly why brands competing on price stay quiet about it. At the cheap end, silence is informative rather than neutral. Ergoflex publishes that its comfort layer is high density and has traded since 2006.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Model numbers are read as spring counts, and Mlily's Memory and Memory Gel collections contain no springs at all while every other Mlily collection numbers by spring count in a king size. A Memory Gel 200 beside a Gel 1000 looks like a choice between 200 and 1,000 springs and is actually a choice between none and a thousand.

Should you buy it?

Only for a spare room or occasional use, judged as cheap foam rather than as a number.

At this money you can buy springs. Silentnight from 169 pounds or Emma's Original Lite at 199 with a three-zone spring layer.
