Best double bunk beds
A double bunk is frequently bought for adults, which makes the stated weight limit the first thing to read.
I earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page. It never changes what I recommend, and I publish negative verdicts on brands I earn from. Editorial independence.
A double bunk has a double bed at one level, usually the bottom, with a single or a second double above. The common versions are the triple bunk, single over double, and the double over double.
They are frequently bought for adults or for teenagers approaching adult weight, which changes two things.
Weight limits matter more. Frames state a limit per bunk, and on a double that limit has to carry two people rather than one. Read it before anything else.
The guard rail calculation is the same and less forgiving. A rail must stand a minimum height above the top of the mattress, so every centimetre of mattress depth is a centimetre off the rail, and adults want deeper mattresses than children.
Look for compliance with BS EN 747, the UK bunk bed standard.
The picks
The pick, if you want one answer
Emma Original Lite Mattress, 7.3 / 10. A shallow mattress with genuine spring structure, which is the combination a bunk depth limit demands.
| Product | Best for | From | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emma Original Lite Mattress | Best for the lower double | £199 | 7.3 / 10 |
| Silentnight Sleep Now Range | Best shallow option | From £169 | 6.7 / 10 |
| Simba Hybrid Kids Mattress | Best for a child on the top | Mid range | 7.6 / 10 |
| Rem-Fit Kids Mattress | Best value | Budget to mid | 7.5 / 10 |
Emma Original Lite Mattress: Best for the lower double
£199 · 7.3 / 10
A three-zone pocket spring layer at £199 with a 200 night trial. Check the depth against both the frame's stated maximum and the headroom under the upper bunk, because a deep mattress on the bottom leaves no room to sit up.
Buy it if
You need a real double mattress and the lower bunk has headroom for it.
Do not buy it if
The frame caps the depth lower than this.

Silentnight Sleep Now Range: Best shallow option
From £169 · 6.7 / 10
From a manufacturer trading since 1946. At shallow depths, firm is what makes a thin mattress work: you are not sinking far, so there is less need for the structure a thicker mattress provides.
Buy it if
The frame caps mattress depth for the upper bunk.
Do not buy it if
You want depth.

Simba Hybrid Kids Mattress: Best for a child on the top
Mid range · 7.6 / 10
Scores 7.6. Built around what matters in a child's bed: waterproofing, a washable cover, and firm support at a low body weight. Check the depth against the frame's stated maximum before ordering.
Buy it if
The upper bunk is for a child.
Do not buy it if
An adult sleeps up there.

Rem-Fit Kids Mattress: Best value
Budget to mid · 7.5 / 10
Scores 7.5. Rem-Fit's eligibility schemes are unusually broad, covering key workers, seniors and students, which matters more when the purchase is multiplied across bunks.
Buy it if
You are buying two or three mattresses at once.
Do not buy it if
You need the absolute lowest price.

The safety checks, in order
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Weight limit, stated per bunk | On a double it carries two people, not one |
| Maximum mattress depth | Guard rail height is measured from the mattress top |
| BS EN 747 compliance | The UK standard for rail heights, gaps and strength |
| Guard rails on all four sides above | Including where the ladder meets the frame |
| Ladder fixed, not hooked on | A ladder that shifts is the commonest fall risk |
| Headroom on the lower bunk | Enough to sit up, with the mattress in place |
| Slat spacing, both levels | No more than about 7.5cm, or mattresses sag and guarantees void |
Two things frames rarely make prominent. Top bunks are generally not recommended for children under six, and manufacturers state a minimum age. And a topper cannot be added to an upper bunk, because it raises the sleeping surface and reduces the effective rail height.
What changes when adults use one
Load. Two adults on a double bunk is a very different load from two children, and the stated limit is the figure that matters rather than how solid it feels.
Mattress expectations. Adults want 25 to 30 centimetres and bunks frequently cap depth around 15 to 20. That is the compromise, and firm construction is what makes a shallow mattress tolerable.
Getting out at night. An adult descending a ladder half awake is a real consideration, and a staircase-style bunk with a handrail is a meaningfully safer design if the room allows it.
Headroom. An adult sitting up on the lower bunk needs more clearance than a child, and a deep mattress eats it.
Construction, which matters more at this load
Bolts into solid timber, or metal into metal, hold far better than cam lock fittings, which loosen in the same hole each time a bed is taken apart. Most substantial bunks are metal for exactly this reason.
Tighten every fixing at six months and then twice a year. A creaking bunk is almost always a loosened joint, and on a bunk that is a safety matter rather than an annoyance.
On metal frames, nylon or rubber washers at metal-to-metal joints stop the grinding that keeps everyone in the room awake.
And check the centre support under the lower double, which some frames omit because the design was scaled up from a single.
Measuring the room
Ceiling height is the measurement people forget. Someone on the top bunk needs to sit up without hitting the ceiling, and a light fitting directly above is a problem.
Access. Assembled bunk frames do not go through doorways or round stair turns, so they are built in the room. Check the flat pack cartons fit the route in.
Floor levelling. A bunk on uneven boards rocks, which is unsettling at height and loosens fixings faster. Felt pads or shims fix it.
Space to strip the top bunk, which is harder than it looks from a showroom floor, and why a protector and a spare fitted sheet are worth having.
What not to do
Exceed the stated weight limit. On a double it carries two people.
Exceed the stated maximum mattress depth. It is a guard rail calculation.
Add a topper to an upper bunk. It raises the sleeping surface.
Put a child under six on a top bunk, and check the stated minimum age.
Skip the six-monthly tightening. On a bunk this is a safety task.
Also considered, and why they are not here
A roundup is only as useful as what it leaves out, so here is what was assessed and rejected for this list.
| Product | Why it is not on the list |
|---|---|
| Origin Hybrid Pro | The highest scoring mattress here at 8.4, and too deep for most bunk frames. Check the stated maximum before wanting it. |
| Inofia Elegant | Twenty-seven centimetres at around £210, which suits a lower bunk only where headroom and the stated depth allow. |
| Mlily Memory Gel 200 | Scores 5.5. Shallow foam fits the depth limit, and no published density means no way to judge how long it lasts. |
| Panda Kids Pillow | A pillow rather than a mattress, and the cheapest improvement a child's bunk can have, because adult pillows are far too high for a child. |
How this list is made, and who made it
Independence
No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.
Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.
What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.
See editorial independence, corrections and the author page.
How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
Prices move constantly. Judge the cash price on the day rather than any percentage beside it. See every review on this site or where the real savings are.
Questions people ask
Can adults use a double bunk bed?
If the stated weight limit allows it, and that limit is per bunk and has to carry two people on a double rather than one. Read it before anything else, and consider a staircase-style design with a handrail for night-time descents.
What mattress depth can a bunk bed take?
Whatever the frame states, commonly 15 to 20 centimetres. A guard rail has to stand a minimum height above the top of the mattress, so every extra centimetre of depth is a centimetre off the effective rail.
Can I put a topper on a bunk bed?
Not on an upper bunk. A topper raises the sleeping surface, which reduces the effective guard rail height, and that is the one thing a bunk does not allow.
What safety standard should a UK bunk bed meet?
BS EN 747, which covers guard rail heights, gap sizes and structural strength. A frame stating compliance is worth more than one describing itself as sturdy.
