What gel actually does
Gel is a heat sink, not a cooling system. It absorbs warmth from your body until it reaches the same temperature as you, and then it has nowhere to put any more.
That makes the surface feel cool when you get in, which is genuine and welcome, and it is largely spent within the first hour. It does nothing at 3am, which is when people actually complain about heat.
The reason this matters is that gel is almost always added to foam, and foam is the problem it is supposed to solve. Foam has small closed cells and almost no air movement, so heat that reaches it stays there.
Heat leaves a mattress when air moves through it. That is structural, and it is why the picks on this page are sprung.

Only the last row keeps working through the night, and it does so because of the holes rather than the gel. A solid gel layer, however cool at first touch, eventually reaches your temperature and stays there.
What actually keeps a bed cool
Air moving through the mattress. A deep pocket spring layer is a large volume of open structure. This is the single biggest factor and it never degrades.
Moisture moving away from your skin. Damp fabric feels warm whatever the air temperature, and clamminess is what most people describe as sleeping hot. A lyocell or cotton percale sheet does more here than any gel.
The right duvet tog. Seven to 10.5 suits most modern UK bedrooms. Thirteen and a half is a convention from draughtier housing and is the commonest single cause of overheating.
A breathable protector. A cheap plastic-backed one blocks air as well as liquid, and it is the most common way a good hybrid ends up sleeping hot.
Those four cost less than the premium on a gel mattress and address the problem for the whole night.
The pairing that undoes everything
Foam on top of springs
If you buy a hybrid for its airflow and then add a foam topper, you have sealed yourself off from the spring layer. A gel-infused foam topper does the same thing, with a cool first hour.
If a hybrid needs softening, use micro-spring, spacer mesh, latex or wool.
What to ask before paying a gel premium
What is underneath the gel? If the answer is foam, the gel is managing a problem the construction created.
Is the spring layer a real core or a thin comfort layer? Otty's 16 centimetres is a support core; a 25 millimetre micro-spring layer over a foam base is something else entirely, and both are sold as hybrids.
What is the foam density? Decent comfort layers run 48 to 72 kilograms per cubic metre, and almost nobody publishes it. At the cheap end that silence is informative.
Would the money be better spent on bedding? Frequently yes, and it is reversible in a way a mattress is not.
What not to buy
Gel-infused foam expecting all-night cooling. The effect is spent within the hour.
A gel-infused cover. Your sheet sits on top of it.
A gel foam topper on a hybrid. You have cancelled the airflow you paid for.
Any cooling claim over a plastic-backed protector. That undoes it.

Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.
What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
