Almost nobody needs a waterproof mattress. What they need is a waterproof protector, which costs a fraction as much and works better.

Two different products
A waterproof mattress has a sealed cover bonded to the mattress itself. It is used in cots, care settings and clinical environments where the whole surface has to be wipeable.
A waterproof protector is a removable layer over a normal mattress. It is what almost everyone searching for the first thing actually wants.
The protector wins for a simple reason: it comes off and goes in the washing machine. A sealed mattress cover can be wiped, and it cannot be washed at 60 degrees, which is what kills dust mites.
The one genuine exception is a cot mattress, where waterproofing is part of safer sleep guidance rather than a convenience.

Breathability is the specification, not waterproofing
Every waterproof protector blocks liquid. They differ in whether they also block air.
A cheap waterproof protector is effectively a plastic sheet with a fabric face. It stops liquid and it stops air, so it traps humidity underneath, makes the bed hotter, and gives dust mites the conditions they need.
Put one over a deep spring layer and you have sealed off the airflow that was the entire reason you bought the mattress. This is the most common reason someone buys a hybrid for temperature and cannot understand why it still sleeps warm.
A breathable membrane passes water vapour while blocking liquid. That is the thing to look for, and it is usually stated.

A quilted pad is effectively a thin topper. If you are still inside a sleep trial, use a thin fitted protector rather than a quilted pad, because the padding masks the firmness you are supposed to be judging.
Why this is the best value purchase in bedding
A stain voids most mattress guarantees absolutely. Not partially, not at the manufacturer's discretion. It is the single most common reason a legitimate claim is refused, and over eight years the probability of one spill is high.
It also protects a sleep trial. Trial terms typically require the mattress to be in a condition fit for collection, so a stained mattress is usually not returnable even inside the window. A 365 night trial gives you a year to change your mind and a year in which one glass of wine ends that option.
Twenty to forty pounds, fitted before the first night.
Washing, and the thing that kills them
Wash at 60 degrees if anyone in the house has allergies, because house dust mites survive a 40 degree wash. Forty removes accumulated allergen; sixty kills the population.
The membrane is the fragile part. High heat in a tumble dryer destroys waterproof protectors far faster than washing does: the membrane delaminates or cracks and the protector silently stops working while looking fine.
Tumble low or line dry, and check the care label before buying if you need 60 degree washing, because not every membrane tolerates it.
What not to buy
A waterproof mattress for an adult bed. A protector does the job better and washes.
A cheap plastic-backed protector on a hybrid. You seal off the airflow you paid for.
A quilted pad as your only protection. Many are not waterproof at all. Check explicitly.
A protector cut for 25 centimetres on a 32 centimetre mattress. Measure first.
A fitted protector for dust mite allergy. You want a fully zipped six-sided encasement.

Independence
No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.
Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.
What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
