Rolling a mattress is a distribution solution, and it says nothing about what is inside it.

A roll up mattress is compressed, rolled and vacuum-sealed so a courier can carry it. That is the whole meaning of the term.
It is genuinely useful. A boxed mattress gets up a staircase a conventional one cannot, and bending a sprung mattress round a tight turn can permanently damage the spring unit, which voids most guarantees.
It also changed the price of the category, because cutting showrooms and warehousing out of the chain put real spring counts into brackets that used to buy foam slabs.
What it does not tell you is the construction. Judge a rolled mattress exactly as you would judge any other: spring height and where the springs sit, spring count for your size, whether the base is sprung or foam, and firmness.

A folding mattress is a different product from a rolled one: it folds repeatedly rather than once. Expect it to be firm and to show fold lines, which is inherent. For occasional guest use stored in a cupboard, it beats a sofa bed on sleeping and on price.

What the first week looks like
Compression has consequences nobody explains at the point of sale.
Expansion takes 24 to 72 hours, and a cold room slows it considerably because foam is stiffer when cold. A mattress unrolled in an unheated bedroom in January can take twice as long as the box says.
It will smell. Off-gassing is normal, peaks in the first 48 hours and fades. Air the room and leave the mattress uncovered for a day before making the bed.
It will feel wrong at first. New mattresses feel different for a fortnight, partly because they are still settling and partly because your body has adapted to whatever you slept on before.
The first two nights tell you almost nothing, which is exactly why a trial period matters more than a discount.
Unboxing without damaging it
Get it into the room before opening it. Once it expands it will not go through a doorway easily, and that is the entire advantage you paid for.
Cut the plastic, do not stab it. A blade through the wrapping can cut the cover or the top comfort layer, and that damage is not a warranty matter.
Orient it first. Work out which way round it goes before releasing the vacuum, because it expands fast.
Leave it flat and uncovered. Do not put bedding on it while it is expanding, and do not stand it on its side.
You cannot re-roll it
This matters for returns and for moving
Vacuum compression uses industrial equipment. Once a mattress has expanded, you cannot put it back in the box.
For a sleep trial, that is the brand's problem: the good ones arrange collection, and it is worth confirming who collects and who pays before ordering.
For house moves, it means a boxed mattress is only easy to move once. Plan the second move as you would with any mattress.
And the base still decides everything
Slat spacing no more than about 7.5 centimetres, because wider gaps cause sagging and void most guarantees, and the frame both creates the fault and disqualifies the claim.
A centre rail with a supporting leg on a double or larger, two at super king width.
Deep fitted sheets. Modern rolled hybrids run 28 to 35 centimetres and standard UK sheets are cut for around 25, so budget for sheets alongside the mattress.
A protector, fitted before the first night. A stain voids most guarantees absolutely and ends a sleep trial, because trial terms require the mattress to be fit for collection.
What not to do
Open it outside the room it is going in.
Judge it in the first two nights. Give it a fortnight.
Assume rolled means foam. Many rolled mattresses have deep spring cores; ask for the specification.
Put bedding on it while it expands.
Plan on re-rolling it. Vacuum compression needs industrial equipment.

Independence
No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.
Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.
What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
