Best queen size mattresses

Britain has no queen size. If you are searching for one, you have almost certainly seen a US or Australian listing.

I earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page. It never changes what I recommend, and I publish negative verdicts on brands I earn from. Editorial independence.

There is no UK queen

UK bed sizes are single, small double, double, king, super king and emperor. Queen is not among them.

A US queen is about 152 by 203 centimetres. An Australian queen is about 153 by 203. Neither is a UK size, and neither will fit a UK frame or take UK fitted sheets.

The closest UK equivalent is a king at 150 by 200 centimetres: two centimetres narrower and three shorter than a US queen, which is close enough that a UK king is what you want.

Confusingly, some UK retailers use queen informally for sizes between a double and a king. If you see it, ask for the dimensions in centimetres rather than assuming.

Otty Original Hybrid Mattress: Best if you sleep hot

Around £500 area · 8.1 / 10

Scores 8.1. A 16 centimetre spring core, which is a support structure rather than a thin comfort layer of springs above a foam base.

Buy it if

Heat is your main complaint.

Do not buy it if

You want to sink in.

Tweak: Best for couples who disagree

Mid range · 7.8 / 10

Scores 7.8. A different firmness each side. At king size each person has 75 centimetres, which is workable; a super king at 90 each puts you further from the transition zone every dual firmness mattress has down the middle.

Buy it if

You and your partner differ in weight or preferred firmness.

Do not buy it if

You both want the same thing.

UK sizes, and the international ones people mistake for them

What the names actually measure
NameDimensionsMarket
Double135 x 190cmUK
King150 x 200cmUK
Super king180 x 200cmUK
Queenabout 152 x 203cmUS
Queenabout 153 x 203cmAustralia
King160 x 200cmEurope
Double140 x 200cmEurope

Two traps sit in that table. A European king at 160 centimetres is wider than a UK king and narrower than a UK super king, so it matches neither. And a US king at about 193 centimetres is wider than a UK super king, which catches people importing American bedding.

Why you cannot simply buy the queen anyway

Three things break at once, and they compound.

The frame. A UK frame is built to UK dimensions. A mattress two or three centimetres out either sits proud of the frame or leaves a gap at the edges, which is both uncomfortable and a trip hazard.

The bedding. A UK fitted sheet will not stay on a wider mattress, and a US queen sheet will be loose on a UK king. Every future sheet, protector and topper purchase inherits the problem.

The resale and replacement. When the mattress needs replacing, you are back to importing, and specialist sizes cost more and ship slower.

It is a decision you live with for years rather than a one-off inconvenience.

What each size actually gives two people

Width per person
SizeEach of two
Double, 135cm67.5cm
King, 150cm75cm
Super king, 180cm90cm, the same as a UK single

Worth knowing before settling on a king: in a double each adult gets about 25 per cent less width than a child sleeping alone. A super king is the first size where each person has a single bed's width, and for couples that usually does more than any specification upgrade.

If you already have a non-UK mattress

You are not stuck, and the options are narrower than usual.

Sheets are the main difficulty. Deep fitted sheets in the next size up, with the excess tucked, work better than a sheet that is slightly short, because a short sheet works loose at the corners every night.

Toppers and protectors in the next size up will overhang, which is untidy and functional, provided the topper is anchored by a deep fitted sheet sized for the mattress and topper together.

When you replace the mattress, switch to a UK size and replace the frame at the same time. Doing both at once is the only clean way out.

What not to do

Buy a US or Australian queen for a UK bedroom. The frame, the bedding and every future replacement all inherit the problem.

Assume a European king is a UK king. It is 160 centimetres against 150.

Trust the word queen on a UK listing. Ask for the dimensions in centimetres.

Buy a slightly short fitted sheet. It works loose at the corners every night.

Replace a non-UK mattress without replacing the frame. Do both at once.

Also considered, and why they are not here

A roundup is only as useful as what it leaves out, so here is what was assessed and rejected for this list.

Considered and not recommended here
ProductWhy it is not on the list
Emma Original LiteExcellent at £199 in UK sizes, with limited support headroom for two adults of different weights on a king.
Simba Hybrid UltraThirty-four centimetres and 7,300 springs at £1,749 in king. Origin beats it on depth and count for well under half.
Mlily Supreme 10000The only 10 out of 10 for motion isolation here, and a plush specification using thin-gauge springs rather than a supportive one.

How this list is made, and who made it

Independence

No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.

Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.

What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.

What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.

What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

See editorial independence, corrections and the author page.

How these were chosen

Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.

A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.

Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.

I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.

Prices move constantly. Judge the cash price on the day rather than any percentage beside it. See every review on this site or where the real savings are.

Questions people ask

Is there a queen size mattress in the UK?

No. UK sizes are single, small double, double, king, super king and emperor. A US queen is about 152 by 203cm and an Australian queen about 153 by 203, and neither fits a UK frame or takes UK fitted sheets.

What is the UK equivalent of a queen size?

A UK king at 150 by 200 centimetres, which is two centimetres narrower and three shorter than a US queen. That is close enough that a UK king is what you want.

Is a European king the same as a UK king?

No. A European king is 160 by 200 centimetres, wider than a UK king at 150 and narrower than a UK super king at 180, so it matches neither.

What if I already own a non-UK sized mattress?

Buy deep fitted sheets in the next size up and tuck the excess, since a short sheet works loose every night. When you replace the mattress, switch to a UK size and replace the frame at the same time.
