Best super king mattress toppers

At super king width, two single toppers side by side solve a problem one large topper cannot.

A super king is 180 by 200 centimetres, which gives each person 90 centimetres, the width of a UK single. That fact changes what a topper can do.

Across that width, one topper commits both of you to the same surface. Two single toppers laid side by side let each person choose, which is the only way to resolve the commonest disagreement in a shared bed: one of you finds the mattress too firm and the other does not.

UK singles are 90 by 190 centimetres, ten short of the 200 a super king needs, which is a real gap and manageable at the foot end where nobody lies.

Two singles are also far easier to handle. A super king topper is heavy, awkward to fit alone, and difficult to air.

The picks

Simba Mattress Topper, 7.5 / 10. The strongest topper here, and the one worth buying twice if you and your partner disagree.

Simba Mattress Topper: Best overall

Mid range · 7.5 / 10

The highest scoring topper on this site at 7.5. Micro-springs push back rather than moulding, so you get cushioning while keeping open structure, and two singles of this are a better buy than one super king of anything if you disagree about firmness.

Buy it if

You want a softer surface without the heat penalty of foam.

Do not buy it if

The mattress is genuinely too hard. Dense foam changes it more.

Silentnight Airmax Topper: Best for a hybrid

Budget to mid · 7.4 / 10

Scores 7.4. Spacer mesh is mostly air, which is what a hybrid needs above it. A foam topper on a hybrid seals you off from the spring layer you paid for, and at super king that is a lot of sealing.

Buy it if

You own a deep sprung mattress and want it softer without blocking the airflow.

Do not buy it if

You want deep cushioning.

Tempur Topper: Biggest change available

Premium · 6.8 / 10

Scores 6.8, averaging ten out of ten for softening and three for temperature. Across a super king that heat penalty applies to both of you, which is the argument for buying it as a single and leaving the other side alone.

Buy it if

The mattress is genuinely too hard to sleep on and you do not sleep warm.

Do not buy it if

You sleep hot, or only one of you wants it.

Panda Hybrid Bamboo Mattress Topper: Best for clamminess

Mid range · 7.2 / 10

Scores 7.2. Cushioning under a cover that moves moisture, which is a different complaint from heat. Damp fabric against skin feels warm whatever the air temperature.

Buy it if

You wake up damp rather than hot.

Do not buy it if

You own a hybrid bought for airflow.

Why two singles usually wins

One super king topper against two singles
ConsiderationTwo singles
Different firmness needsSolved. Each person chooses.
Handling and fittingFar easier. One person can manage a single.
AiringPractical. A super king topper is very hard to stand up.
ReplacementReplace one side when it goes, not both.
The joinA gap down the middle unless a deep fitted sheet holds them.
LengthUK singles are 190cm against 200. A gap at the foot.

The last two rows are the cost, and one purchase fixes both: a deep super king fitted sheet over the whole lot holds the two toppers together in one plane and stops the join opening.

If you want this properly rather than improvised, zip and link is the designed version: two singles built to join, at 200 centimetres, usually with a topper made to run across both.

The sheet arithmetic

Add the mattress depth to the topper depth, and buy a few centimetres over so the fabric folds under rather than merely reaching the edge.

Standard UK fitted sheets are cut for about 25 centimetres. Modern hybrids run 28 to 35, and a topper adds 5 to 10, so a 30 centimetre mattress with a 7 centimetre topper needs a 37 centimetre sheet or deeper.

At super king the sheet is doing more work than at any other size: it is what anchors the topper across a very wide surface, and a shallow sheet that pings off a corner takes the topper with it.

Budget for sheets alongside the topper, not afterwards.

Two free checks before spending

Measure the dip. Lay a straight edge across the mattress and measure the gap at its deepest point. More than about 25 millimetres and the topper follows the dip within weeks.

On a super king specifically, measure both sides separately. Two people of different weights wear a mattress unevenly, and a dip on one side only is common and easy to miss.

Check the base. Slats no more than about 7.5 centimetres apart, and on a bed this wide a centre rail with a supporting leg is not optional. A sagging centre reads exactly like a soft mattress.

Which direction you need

Hip or shoulder pain side sleeping means the mattress is too firm, which is what a topper solves.

Lower back ache on waking that eases as you move means too soft, and softening it further makes it worse. That is a support problem, and support comes from beneath you rather than from anything laid on top.

If one of you has each of those symptoms, that is exactly the case for two different toppers rather than a compromise across the whole bed.

What not to buy

One super king topper if you disagree about firmness. Buy two singles.

A foam topper on a hybrid. At this width you seal off a great deal of spring layer.

A topper without a deep sheet sized for both layers.

A topper for a mattress with a dip over 25 millimetres, on either side.

A topper if your lower back aches on waking. Wrong direction.

Also considered, and why they are not here

A roundup is only as useful as what it leaves out, so here is what was assessed and rejected for this list.

Considered and not recommended here
ProductWhy it is not on the list
Dormeo TopperScores 7.2. Foam cut into cylinders with open channels, and Dormeo lists high against near-permanent discounting, so judge the cash price alone.
Origin ContourScores 7.1. Useful for evening out a surface, and a few centimetres on top cannot restructure how a spine is supported.
Tweak DuoScores 7.8. A dual firmness mattress, which solves the disagreement at the mattress rather than patching it with two toppers.
Emma TopperScores 6.8. Competent and frequently discounted, so compare the cash price rather than the percentage.

How this list is made, and who made it

Independence

No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.

Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.

What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.

What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.

What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

See editorial independence, corrections and the author page.

How these were chosen

Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.

A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.

Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.

I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.

Prices move constantly. Judge the cash price on the day rather than any percentage beside it. See every review on this site or where the real savings are.

Questions people ask

Should I buy one super king topper or two singles?

Two singles, if you and your partner disagree about firmness, because a super king gives each person 90 centimetres, the width of a UK single. Two are also far easier to fit, air and replace.

What is the gap if I use two single toppers on a super king?

UK singles are 190 centimetres long against the 200 a super king needs, so there is a gap at the foot end, and a join down the middle. A deep super king fitted sheet over both holds them in one plane.

What depth sheet do I need for a super king with a topper?

Add the mattress depth to the topper depth and buy a few centimetres over. A 30 centimetre mattress with a 7 centimetre topper needs a 37 centimetre sheet or deeper.

Why should I measure both sides of a super king mattress?

Because two people of different weights wear a mattress unevenly, so a dip on one side only is common. More than about 25 millimetres at the deepest point and a topper follows it within weeks.
