Verdict

7.2/ 10

An Octaspring topper, which is the one application where Dormeo's foam cylinder idea is unambiguously the right engineering. A topper's whole job is surface behaviour, and a layer of individually responding cylinders with open channels between them does that without the heat penalty every foam topper carries.

Buy it if

Your mattress is sound but too firm, and you sleep warm enough that a memory foam topper would make things worse.

Avoid it if

Your mattress has dipped more than about 25 millimetres. No topper solves that.

I have been lukewarm about Octaspring in mattresses, so it is worth explaining why a topper is different.

In a mattress, a layer of foam cylinders has to compete with steel springs. Foam fatigues over years in a way steel does not, whatever shape it is cut into, so a foam-cylinder mattress gives up durability to a hybrid.

In a topper, none of that applies. A topper's entire job is surface behaviour: softening the feel of a mattress that is already structurally sound. It is not supposed to provide support, because the mattress underneath does that.

So a layer of individually responding cylinders with open channels between them is exactly right for the application. It softens the surface while letting air move, which is the thing memory foam toppers cannot do.

This is the same reason Simba's micro-spring topper works: putting open structure at the surface is a topper problem well solved.

Every topper guide recommends the wrong thing

Memory foam is the default topper recommendation everywhere, and it is wrong for a large group of people.

Memory foam responds to body heat by design, which means it is built to retain warmth at the surface. Adding a layer puts insulation between you and whatever airflow your mattress provides. On a hybrid, it sits above the springs and cuts you off from the thing that was doing the cooling.

Choose on the middle column
TypeSoftensEffect on heat
Memory foamStronglyMakes you warmer
Foam cylinder or micro-springModeratelyNeutral to cooling
LatexModerately, with bounceNeutral
WoolMildlyRegulates moisture

Softening is the easy part and every topper does it. The heat consequence is what people get wrong, and it is why the middle column should decide your choice rather than the thickness on the packaging.

Measure before you buy anything

The 25 millimetre rule

A topper changes firmness. It does not change support.

If your mattress has a dip of more than about 25 millimetres, a topper will follow that dip within a few weeks and the money is gone. Lay a straight edge across the mattress and measure the gap at its deepest point.

Toppers are for a structurally sound mattress that is too firm, or for changing the surface feel. They are not a repair, and using one to delay replacing a failed mattress costs you the money that would have contributed to the replacement.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Mattress toppers are compared on thickness, as though they all do the same job with more or less of it. The material decides far more than the depth. A memory foam topper adds insulation and makes a warm sleeper warmer, and on a hybrid it sits above the springs and cuts the sleeper off from the airflow that was doing the cooling. Toppers built around open structures, whether foam cylinders or micro-springs, soften the surface while leaving airflow largely intact.

Should you buy it?

Yes on a genuine discount, and it is one of the better options for anyone who wants a softer surface without the heat penalty of memory foam.

Measure your mattress for a dip first. And compare it against Simba's micro-spring topper and a wool topper, which solve the same problem by different routes.

Questions people ask

Is an Octaspring topper better than memory foam?

For anyone who sleeps warm, yes. Memory foam responds to body heat by design and adds insulation between you and your mattress's airflow. Foam cylinders with open channels between them soften the surface while letting air move.

Will a topper fix a sagging mattress?

No. A topper conforms to the surface beneath it, so a dip of more than about 25 millimetres reappears through it within weeks. Lay a straight edge across the mattress and measure the gap at its deepest point before buying anything.

Which mattress topper should I buy?

Choose on the heat column rather than thickness. Memory foam softens most and makes you warmer. Foam cylinder and micro-spring toppers soften moderately and leave airflow intact. Wool softens least and manages moisture best.
