Best small double mattress toppers

A small double is 120 by 190 centimetres, and half the products sold for one are cut for something else.

I earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page. It never changes what I recommend, and I publish negative verdicts on brands I earn from. Editorial independence.

A small double, sometimes called a three quarter bed, is 120 by 190 centimetres. A standard UK double is 135 by 190.

That 15 centimetre difference causes most of the trouble in this category, because small double is stocked far less widely than double, and listings frequently use the names loosely. A topper cut for a double overhangs by 7.5 centimetres on each side, which sounds trivial and is enough to stop a fitted sheet holding it flat.

So the rule on this page is simple: buy by centimetres, not by name, and check the measurements on the listing rather than the size label.

The other thing worth knowing is that at 120 centimetres, two people have 60 each, which is narrower than a UK single.

Simba Mattress Topper: Best overall

Mid range · 7.5 / 10

The highest scoring topper on this site at 7.5. Micro-springs push back rather than moulding, so you keep open structure at the surface. Confirm the stated dimensions in centimetres before ordering, whatever the size is called.

Buy it if

You want a softer surface without the heat penalty of foam.

Do not buy it if

The mattress is genuinely too hard. Dense foam changes it more.

Silentnight Airmax Topper: Best for a hybrid

Budget to mid · 7.4 / 10

Scores 7.4. Spacer mesh is mostly air. On a narrow bed this matters more than it sounds: two people at 60 centimetres each are close together, and body heat accumulates between you.

Buy it if

You own a sprung mattress and want it softer without blocking the airflow.

Do not buy it if

You want deep cushioning.

Panda Hybrid Bamboo Mattress Topper: Best for clamminess

Mid range · 7.2 / 10

Scores 7.2. Cushioning under a cover that moves moisture, which is the right answer for the dampness two people generate in a narrow bed.

Buy it if

You wake up damp rather than hot.

Do not buy it if

You own a hybrid bought for airflow.

Inofia Mattress Topper: Best value

Budget · 6.8 / 10

Scores 6.8, scoring lowest on anchoring, which a deep fitted sheet fixes for a few pounds. On a small double the anchoring matters more, because there is less width for a topper to stay put across.

Buy it if

You want cheap softening and will anchor it properly.

Do not buy it if

You want the longest life.

The sizing table to check against

UK bed sizes, in centimetres
NameSizeEach person
Single90 x 190cm90cm
Small double120 x 190cm60cm shared
Double135 x 190cm67.5cm shared
King150 x 200cm75cm shared

Two things fall out of that. A small double shared gives each person 60 centimetres, two thirds of a UK single, which is why couples feel the difference so strongly between this and a double.

And the length is 190 rather than the 200 of a king, so a topper cut for a king is wrong in both directions.

What to do when the size is not stocked

Small double toppers are stocked thinly, and the workarounds are not all equal.

A double topper trimmed to fit: possible with foam and a sharp blade, and it ruins a micro-spring or spacer mesh topper, which has structure that cannot be cut. Check before considering it, and accept that trimming voids any guarantee.

A double topper left overhanging: the 7.5 centimetres each side will not sit flat under a sheet and the topper will shift nightly. Not recommended.

A single topper on one side: genuinely reasonable if only one of you wants the change, and at 90 centimetres it covers three quarters of the bed. Odd looking, and it works.

Wait for stock. Frequently the right answer, because a topper that does not fit ends up in a cupboard whatever it cost.

The sheet is what holds it

Add the mattress depth to the topper depth and buy a few centimetres over so the fabric folds under.

Standard UK fitted sheets are cut for about 25 centimetres, and modern mattresses run 28 to 35, so a 28 centimetre mattress with a 5 centimetre topper needs a 33 centimetre sheet or deeper.

Small double bedding is also stocked less widely than double, so check the fitted sheet is available in your size and depth before buying the topper. A topper with no sheet to hold it is a topper that has gone diagonal by week two.

Free checks before spending

Measure the dip. Lay a straight edge across the mattress and measure the deepest gap. More than about 25 millimetres and the topper follows the dip within weeks.

Check which way the mattress is wrong. Hip or shoulder pain side sleeping means too firm, which a topper solves. Lower back ache on waking that eases as you move means too soft, and a topper makes that worse.

Measure the slat gaps. Over about 7.5 centimetres and the frame is causing the sagging and voiding the guarantee.

What not to buy

A topper by size name. Check the centimetres on the listing.

A double topper to overhang a small double. It will not sit flat.

A micro-spring or mesh topper intending to trim it. The structure cannot be cut.

A topper before checking a fitted sheet exists in your size and depth.

Any topper for a mattress with a dip over 25 millimetres.

Also considered, and why they are not here

A roundup is only as useful as what it leaves out, so here is what was assessed and rejected for this list.

Considered and not recommended here
ProductWhy it is not on the list
Dormeo TopperScores 7.2. Foam cut into cylinders with channels between them, and one of the few constructions where trimming is at least physically possible.
Tempur TopperSoftens more than anything in the category and is the warmest, which is a bigger consideration on a narrow bed shared by two people.
Origin ContourScores 7.1. Useful for evening out a surface, and zoning in a few centimetres cannot restructure how a spine is supported.
Mlily Premier TopperScores 6.9. Cheap foam softens about as well as dear foam on day one, and what you give up is durability and anchoring.

How this list is made, and who made it

Independence

No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.

Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.

What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.

What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.

What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

See editorial independence, corrections and the author page.

How these were chosen

Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.

A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.

Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.

I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.

Prices move constantly. Judge the cash price on the day rather than any percentage beside it. See every review on this site or where the real savings are.

Questions people ask

What size is a small double mattress topper?

A small double is 120 by 190 centimetres, against a standard UK double at 135 by 190. Buy by centimetres rather than by name, because listings use the names loosely and the 15 centimetre difference stops a sheet holding the topper flat.

Can I use a double topper on a small double bed?

Not well. It overhangs by 7.5 centimetres on each side, which will not sit flat under a fitted sheet, so the topper shifts nightly. A single topper on one side is a better improvisation.

Can I cut a mattress topper to fit?

Foam can be trimmed with a sharp blade, and micro-spring and spacer mesh toppers cannot, because they have structure that does not survive cutting. Trimming voids any guarantee.

How much room does each person get in a small double?

Sixty centimetres each, which is two thirds of a UK single at 90 centimetres. That is why couples notice the difference between a small double and a double so strongly.
