On a topper, the cover is the whole interface
People choose a topper on its fill and treat the cover as packaging. On a topper specifically, that is backwards.
A mattress has a cover, a quilted layer and often a protector between you and its core. A topper has one thin cover, and then foam. The cover is the entire interface between your body and a material engineered to respond to body heat.
That matters because the sensation people describe as sleeping hot is usually clamminess rather than temperature. Damp fabric against skin feels warm regardless of the air temperature.
A bamboo or lyocell cover absorbs moisture vapour into the fibre and releases it as conditions change. A cheap polyester cover holds it at the surface. Same foam underneath, noticeably different experience.
It does not solve the underlying problem. Foam has small closed cells and almost no air movement, so heat reaching it stays. The cover manages moisture; it does not create airflow.
Do not put this on a hybrid you bought for temperature
The worst pairing in bedding
A hybrid mattress works on temperature because air moves through its spring layer.
A foam topper sits above those springs and cuts you off from exactly that mechanism. No cover on the topper changes it, because the blocking is structural.
If your mattress is a hybrid and slightly too firm, a wool, spacer mesh or micro-spring topper softens the surface without closing off the airflow. If it is genuinely too hard to sleep on and foam is the only thing that will fix it, accept that you will be warmer and make the trade knowingly.
Measure first, and anchor it
The 25 millimetre rule
A topper changes firmness. It does not change support. If your mattress has a dip of more than about 25 millimetres, a topper will follow it within weeks. Lay a straight edge across the mattress and measure the gap at its deepest point.
Every topper slides. Use elastic corner straps if it has them, or a deep fitted sheet sized for the mattress plus the topper together. A 28 centimetre mattress with a 5 centimetre topper needs a 33 centimetre sheet.
