Best small double mattresses
A small double gives two adults 60 centimetres each, which is less than a child gets in a single bed.

A UK small double, sometimes called a three-quarter bed, is 120 by 190 centimetres.
Split between two people that is 60 centimetres each. A UK single, for one child, is 90. So two adults in a small double have a third less width each than a child sleeping alone.
That is not an argument against buying one. It is the reason to be clear about what it is for: one adult with room to move, a couple in a room that genuinely cannot take a double, or a teenager. As a permanent bed for two adults it is tight, and no specification changes that.
The practical difficulty is bedding, which is stocked far less widely than the mattress.
The picks
The pick, if you want one answer
Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress, 8.4 / 10. The strongest general specification available, in a size where most of the market offers budget options only.

| Emma Original Lite Mattress | Best value | £199 area | 7.3 / 10 |

Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress: Best overall
£374 area · 8.4 / 10
The highest scoring mattress on this site at 8.4. Small double is a size where the market thins out considerably, so a brand that makes its full range in it is worth more here than at a king.
Buy it if
One adult, or a couple in a room that cannot take a double, and you want a proper mattress.
Do not buy it if
You need maximum depth for a heavier build.

Emma Original Lite Mattress: Best value
£199 area · 7.3 / 10
A three-zone pocket spring layer with a 200 night trial. Zoning matters in a narrow bed, because two people at 60 centimetres each are close to the middle of the mattress, where any weakness in support shows fastest.
Buy it if
You want a spring layer and zoning at the lowest sensible price.
Do not buy it if
Two adults share it nightly and one is over about fifteen stone.

Silentnight Sleep Now Range: Cheapest worth buying
From £169 area · 6.7 / 10
From a manufacturer trading since 1946. For a shared small double, confirm the springs are pocketed rather than open coil: linked springs mean one person turning over moves the other side, and at 60 centimetres each you are already close together.
Buy it if
It is a teenager's bed or a spare room and price is the deciding factor.
Do not buy it if
Two adults share it. Confirm the springs are pocketed.

Inofia Elegant Collection Mattress: Most depth per pound
Around £210 area · 6.3 / 10
Twenty-seven centimetres and a genuine spring core at around £210, when most mattresses at that money are foam. Depth is worth having in a narrow bed, because you are more likely to be near the edge.
Buy it if
You want a substantial mattress in a size where choice is limited.
Do not buy it if
It is the main bed for two adults long term.

What 120 centimetres actually gives you
| Size | Dimensions | Each of two |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 90 x 190cm | 90cm for one person |
| Small double | 120 x 190cm | 60cm |
| Double | 135 x 190cm | 67.5cm |
| King | 150 x 200cm | 75cm |
Two things follow. The step from small double to double is only 15 centimetres, so if the room takes a double, take it: seven and a half centimetres each is a meaningful proportion of 60.
And the length is 190 centimetres, the same as a single and ten less than a king. At six foot and above, that is the constraint to check before the width.
The bedding is the real difficulty
Check availability before you buy the mattress
Small double sheets, protectors and mattress toppers are stocked far less widely than double or king. Supermarkets and budget ranges frequently skip the size entirely.
Look at what is actually available in the fabrics and depths you want before committing to the size.
Two workarounds. A double fitted sheet will go on a small double with excess fabric, which is untidy but functional. And duvets are the easy part, because a double duvet suits a small double well, giving more overhang than it would on a double, which is an advantage rather than a problem.
Check the mattress depth too: modern hybrids run 28 to 35 centimetres and standard sheets are cut for around 25.
Who a small double is right for
One adult. The best use of the size. Considerably more room than a single without the footprint of a double.
A teenager. Room to grow into, and a bed they will not outgrow at eighteen.
A couple in a genuinely small room. Workable, and be honest that 60 centimetres each is tight and the bed will be the limiting factor in how well you both sleep.
A guest room. Comfortable for one guest and suitable for two occasionally, which is what most guest rooms actually need.
If two of you will share it nightly
Three things help more in this size than in any other.
Pocket springs rather than open coil, because you are close together and movement travels across linked springs.
Two single duvets. At 60 centimetres each, a shared duvet is being pulled from very close range. Separate duvets remove that entirely and let each of you have the tog you actually want.
Enough depth that the edges hold. In a narrow bed you spend more time near the perimeter, and edge support is rarely specified and fails first everywhere.
What not to do
Choose a small double when a double fits. Fifteen centimetres is a meaningful proportion of 60 each.
Buy the mattress before checking bedding availability. The size is stocked far less widely.
Use open coil springs for two sharers.
Assume 190 centimetres is long enough. It is the same length as a single, and a king is ten centimetres longer.
Buy a European size expecting it to fit. European sizes run to 200 centimetres in length.
Also considered, and why they are not here
A roundup is only as useful as what it leaves out, so here is what was assessed and rejected for this list.
| Product | Why it is not on the list |
|---|---|
| Mlily Memory Gel 200 | Scores 5.5 and has no springs despite the number. In a narrow bed shared by two, independent spring response matters more, not less. |
| Memory One | Scores 5.9. Much of the budget foam market is white label from a small number of producers, so brand names at this level describe very little. |
| Emma Original | All foam when the Original Lite has a spring layer for considerably less. Hard to recommend the dearer foam model. |
| Otty Original | Scores 8.1 and is an excellent mattress. Check availability in this size before setting your heart on it, because small double is where ranges thin out. |
How this list is made, and who made it
Independence
No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.
Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.
What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
Prices move constantly. Judge the cash price on the day rather than any percentage beside it. See every review on this site or where the real savings are.
Questions people ask
How big is a small double mattress?
One hundred and twenty by 190 centimetres, also called a three-quarter bed. Split between two people that is 60 centimetres each, which is a third less than the 90 centimetres a child gets in a single.
Is a small double big enough for two adults?
It is workable in a room that cannot take a double, and it is tight. The step up to a double is only 15 centimetres, so if the room takes one, take it: seven and a half centimetres each is a meaningful proportion of 60.
Is small double bedding hard to find?
Yes, it is stocked far less widely than double or king, and budget ranges frequently skip it. Check availability in the fabrics and depths you want before committing to the size. A double fitted sheet will fit with excess fabric.
How long is a small double bed?
One hundred and ninety centimetres, the same as a single and ten centimetres shorter than a king. At six foot and above, check the length before the width.
