Best mattress for the elderly
For most older adults the hardest part of a bed is not lying on it. It is getting out of it.
I earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page. It never changes what I recommend, and I publish negative verdicts on brands I earn from. Editorial independence.
Mattress marketing aimed at older buyers concentrates almost entirely on pressure relief and firmness. Both matter. Neither is usually the thing that causes difficulty.
Edge support decides whether you can sit on the side of the bed to dress without sliding off, and whether you can push up from that edge to stand. It is rarely specified and it is the first part of a mattress to fail.
Bed height decides how much effort standing takes. Too low is harder to get out of than too high, and mattresses have got considerably deeper over the last decade while frames have not always followed.
Mattress weight decides whether the thing can be turned at all, and a guarantee may require turning.
The picks
The pick, if you want one answer
Otty Extra Firm Hybrid Mattress — 8.0 / 10. Reinforced side panels, which is the specification that most affects getting in and out of bed and which almost nobody publishes.

|---|---|---|---|
| Otty Extra Firm Hybrid Mattress | Best edge support | Around £600 | 8.0 / 10 |
| Silentnight Sofia 1200 Mirapocket | Best all round | Mid range | 7.2 / 10 |

| Hypnos | Best hand-built | Premium | 8.0 / 10 |
Otty Extra Firm Hybrid Mattress — Best edge support
Around £600 · 8.0 / 10
Reinforced side panels, which most hybrids simply do not have. Sitting on the edge of an unreinforced mattress means it collapses under you and you slide, which is both harder work and less safe. This is the clearest specification on the page.
Buy it if
You sit on the edge of the bed to dress or to stand, which is most people.
Do not buy it if
You are light and sleep on your side. This will be too firm at the shoulder.

Silentnight Sofia 1200 Mirapocket — Best all round
Mid range · 7.2 / 10
Zoned 1,200 pocket springs from a manufacturer making beds in Barnoldswick since 1946, with a 60 night comfort exchange buying direct. The exchange matters here: if firmness turns out wrong, swapping is far easier than returning and starting again.
Buy it if
You want zoned support, a manufacturer with history, and the option to change firmness.
Do not buy it if
You need maximum edge reinforcement.

Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress — Best value
£374 · 8.4 / 10
The highest scoring mattress on this site at 8.4. At 26 centimetres it also sits at a sensible depth for bed height, which a 35 centimetre mattress does not.
Buy it if
You want the strongest general specification without spending premium money.
Do not buy it if
You need a very deep mattress, or maximum edge support.

Hypnos — Best hand-built
Premium · 8.0 / 10
Hand-built pocket springs with natural fillings, built to be turned and to last decades. The caveat is the turning: a king size natural filled mattress is heavy and it is a two-person job, and the guarantee may require it.
Buy it if
You want traditional British construction and someone can help turn it.
Do not buy it if
You live alone and cannot turn a heavy mattress. That is a real constraint, not a footnote.
Bed height is the measurement to take first
55 to 65 centimetres
Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress. Somewhere around 55 to 65 centimetres suits most adults: your feet should reach the floor with your knees at roughly a right angle when sitting on the edge.
Too high is awkward to get into. Too low is harder to get out of, and that matters more with age than people anticipate.
The arithmetic that catches people: add the frame deck height to the mattress depth. Modern hybrids run 28 to 35 centimetres, so a frame designed around a 20 centimetre mattress puts the surface far higher than expected, and a low divan with a shallow mattress puts it too low.
Thirty seconds with a tape measure against the current bed answers this, because you already know whether that height works.
Be honest about whether it can be turned
A king size mattress weighs 40 to 50 kilograms. Turning one is a two-person job and natural filled mattresses need it regularly, particularly in the first year while the fillings settle.
If nobody can help you turn it, buy a single-sided mattress that only needs rotating head to foot. Most modern boxed hybrids are single-sided for exactly this reason, and rotating is far easier than flipping.
Check the manufacturer's care instructions before buying, because a guarantee that requires turning is a guarantee you may not be able to keep.
Three things that are not the mattress
The base. Slats more than about 7.5 centimetres apart cause sagging and void most guarantees, and a soft or sagging base makes getting up harder. On a double or larger, a centre rail with a supporting leg matters.
The pillow. A great deal of neck and shoulder discomfort blamed on a mattress is a pillow at the wrong height. Lie in position for ten minutes and have someone look from behind: the neck should be a straight continuation of the spine.
A protector. Twenty to forty pounds, fitted before the first night. A stain voids most guarantees absolutely, and illness, medication and spills are all more likely over the life of a mattress.
If mobility, pain or getting in and out of bed is a persistent difficulty, an occupational therapist can assess the whole setup rather than one component. That is a better use of time than comparing mattresses, and it is available through the NHS.
What not to buy
A very deep mattress without checking the finished bed height. Thirty-five centimetres on a standard frame can put the surface uncomfortably high.
An unreinforced soft mattress if you push up from the edge. It collapses under you exactly when you need it to resist.
A heavy natural filled mattress if nobody can help turn it.
Anything sold as orthopaedic on the strength of the word. It is not a regulated term and carries no specification.
A new mattress before checking the base and the pillow. Both are cheaper and both are common causes.
Also considered, and why they are not here
A roundup is only as useful as what it leaves out, so here is what was assessed and rejected for this list.
| Product | Why it is not on the list |
|---|---|
| Mlily Supreme 10000 | Exceptional motion isolation and a plush specification with thin-gauge springs, which is the opposite of what an easy-to-leave bed needs. |
| Origin LumbarCloud | Outstanding value at 35cm, and that depth is precisely what makes bed height hard to get right on an existing frame. |
| Ergoflex 5G | Best-in-class motion isolation and a long trading history. Foam offers no edge reinforcement, which is the specification that matters most here. |
| Emma Original Lite | Excellent at £199 and unreinforced at the edges, which is normal at that price and a real limitation for this use. |
| Purple | The coolest surface on this site, with an unusual feel that takes adjustment. Worth trying rather than assuming. |
How this list is made, and who made it
Independence
No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict — several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.
Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.
What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do — spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
Prices move constantly. Judge the cash price on the day rather than any percentage beside it. See every review on this site or where the real savings are.
Questions people ask
What is the best mattress height for older adults?
Around 55 to 65 centimetres from the floor to the top of the mattress, so your feet reach the floor with your knees at roughly a right angle when sitting on the edge. Too low is harder to get out of than too high.
Why does edge support matter?
Because it decides whether you can sit on the side of the bed to dress and push up from it to stand. An unreinforced mattress collapses under you at the edge, which is both harder work and less safe. It is rarely specified.
Do I need to turn my mattress?
Natural filled mattresses generally do, and a king size weighs 40 to 50 kilograms, which is a two-person job. If nobody can help, buy a single-sided mattress that only needs rotating head to foot.
What else should I check besides the mattress?
The base, because slats over about 7.5cm apart cause sagging and void guarantees. The pillow height. And fit a protector before the first night, because a stain voids most guarantees absolutely.
