Where the bamboo is
The bamboo is the cover. Inside is foam, and the foam decides how much the topper softens your mattress and how warm it makes you.
Most bamboo fabric is bamboo viscose: cellulose dissolved in chemicals that are typically not recovered, so the finished fabric behaves like viscose.
A viscose cover does something real. It handles moisture better than polyester, and clamminess is what most people describe as sleeping hot, so a cover that keeps you drier helps.
What it does not do is change the rule that governs every topper: softening and warmth move together. A cover cannot undo what the foam underneath it does.

What a cover can and cannot do
It can manage moisture. Bamboo viscose moves moisture away from the skin better than polyester, and damp fabric against skin feels warm whatever the air temperature. That is a genuine benefit.
It cannot create airflow. Heat leaves a mattress or a topper when air moves through the structure, and foam has small closed cells and almost no air movement. A cover sits on top of that problem.
And you cover it anyway. A fitted sheet goes over the topper, so the bamboo face is one more layer down. A polyester sheet over a bamboo topper cancels most of the benefit.

A bamboo cover moves a foam topper a small distance along that line, not to a different row. If heat is the actual problem, the construction is what you change.
Do not put foam on a hybrid
The worst pairing in bedding
A deep spring layer cools by letting air move through it. A foam topper sits above those springs and seals you off from the airflow that was the entire reason you bought the mattress, whatever the cover is made of.
If you own a hybrid and want it softer, buy micro-spring, spacer mesh or wool.
Washing, and the conflict worth knowing
Bamboo viscose wants gentle treatment: wash cool, 40 at most and 30 if you can, tumble low or line dry, and no fabric softener, which coats the fibre and blocks the moisture handling you paid for.
If anyone in the house has a dust mite allergy, bedding needs washing at 60 degrees, because mites survive 40. Bamboo viscose does not enjoy that, so in an allergy household a cover that tolerates a hot wash beats a nicer fibre you have to treat gently.
Check whether the cover is removable at all. On many toppers it is not, which makes the fabric question largely academic.
Two free checks before buying any topper
Measure the dip. Lay a straight edge across the mattress and measure the gap at its deepest point. More than about 25 millimetres and the topper follows the dip within weeks, because a topper conforms to whatever is underneath it.
Plan the anchoring. A deep fitted sheet sized for the mattress and topper together is the reliable fix: a 28 centimetre mattress with a 5 centimetre topper needs a 33 centimetre sheet, and preferably more so the fabric folds under.
What not to buy
A topper chosen on the word bamboo. Judge the fill.
Foam on a hybrid, in any cover.
Charcoal or copper infused foam, expecting the particles to do anything at the surface.
A bamboo cover you cannot remove, if washability was the reason you chose it.
Any topper for a mattress with a dip over 25 millimetres.

Who writes this. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.
What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
