Best bath pillows

A bath pillow lives in warm damp air, which is why most of them end up mouldy rather than worn out.

I earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page. It never changes what I recommend, and I publish negative verdicts on brands I earn from. Editorial independence.

A bath pillow does one thing: it holds your head so your neck is not bent against a hard rim. That matters because a bath rim puts the pressure across the back of the neck, which is exactly where you do not want it, and a folded towel does the job badly and slips.

Two things decide whether one is any good, and neither is comfort in the shop.

Grip. Suction cups release on textured, acrylic-textured or older enamel surfaces, and a pillow that slides down mid-bath is worse than none.

Drying. A pillow that holds water in warm damp air grows mould inside it, which is the usual reason one gets thrown away. A pillow you can hang up to drain outlasts a nicer one you cannot.

The picks

The pick, if you want one answer

Simba Hybrid Pillow, 7.9 / 10. The neck principle that matters everywhere, and the place it matters for eight hours rather than twenty minutes.

Simba Hybrid Pillow: Where neck support actually matters

Mid range · 7.9 / 10

Scores 7.9, the highest on this site. Included deliberately: a bath pillow supports your neck for twenty minutes and your bed pillow does it for eight hours. If the neck is the complaint, that is where the money belongs.

Buy it if

Your neck is uncomfortable in the bath and in bed.

Do not buy it if

You only want something for the bath.

Simba CustomFlex Pillow: If you have never measured your loft

Mid range · 7.7 / 10

Removable fill, adjusted after sleeping on it. The same principle applies in the bath: height decides whether support is comfortable, and a bath pillow that is too thick pushes your chin toward your chest.

Buy it if

You do not know what height your neck needs.

Do not buy it if

You know your height already.

Aeyla Bamboo Pillowcase: Cheapest pleasant upgrade

Budget · 7.6 / 10

Scores 7.6. A smooth moisture-moving fabric is exactly what feels good against damp skin, and unlike a bath pillow it washes weekly and lasts years.

Buy it if

You want the bathroom-and-bedroom feel improved for very little.

Do not buy it if

Your pillow height is wrong. Fix that first.

Origin Coolmax Latex Pillow: Best for long-term neck consistency

Mid range · 7.8 / 10

Scores 7.8. Latex resists compression set, so it does not quietly lose height the way foam does, which is the commonest cause of neck ache appearing with no obvious trigger.

Buy it if

You want a bed pillow that holds its height for years.

Do not buy it if

You want to sink in.

Suction cups, and why they let go

What affects grip
FactorWhat to do
Textured or non-slip bath surfacesSuction will not hold. Look for a strap or a rim-hanging design.
Soap, oil and bath productsThey break the seal. Wipe the area clean and wet before fixing.
Cup size and numberMore and larger cups spread the load. Two small ones fail fastest.
Cold surfaceCups hold better on a warmed, wet surface than a cold dry one
Old or crazed enamelMicro-texture defeats suction entirely

If your bath has any surface texture at all, do not buy a suction-only pillow. A design that hooks over the rim or straps around it is the one that will still be in place next month.

Getting the angle right

The mistake is buying a thick pillow because it looks luxurious.

Too thick and your chin is pushed toward your chest, which is the same fault as a bed pillow that is too high, and twenty minutes of it produces a sore neck. Too thin and your head rests on the rim anyway.

What works is a pillow that fills the gap between the rim and the back of your head while keeping your neck in line with your spine, and one that supports the upper back as well as the head rather than propping the skull alone.

Sit in the bath and feel where the contact should be before choosing a shape. In most baths the pillow needs to sit lower than people expect.

Keeping it out of the bin

Mould is what ends most bath pillows, and it is preventable.

Hang it up after every bath. A loop and a hook on the back of the door is the difference between two years and four months.

Choose a design that drains. Mesh, open cell foam with an open cover, or air-filled beats a sealed fibre pad, which holds water in the middle where nothing dries.

Ventilate the bathroom. Extractor on, or window open, for a while after a bath. This is the same principle as airing a mattress: warm moist air needs somewhere to go.

Check whether the cover is removable and washable, because if it is not, the pillow has a short life whatever you do.

A word on baths and falling asleep

A bath pillow makes a bath comfortable enough to doze in, which is worth naming.

Do not fall asleep in a bath. It is a drowning risk, and it is a greater one after alcohol, or with any medication or condition that causes drowsiness, dizziness or seizures.

Warm baths before bed are genuinely associated with falling asleep more easily, and the mechanism is thought to be the drop in body temperature afterwards rather than the warmth itself. So the useful version is a bath an hour or two before bed, not a long one you drift off in.

If someone in the house has mobility difficulties, an occupational therapist can advise on bathing safely, and a GP can refer.

What not to buy

A suction-only pillow for a textured bath. It will not hold.

A thick pillow. It pushes your chin toward your chest.

A sealed fibre pad. Water sits in the middle and it goes mouldy.

Anything with a cover you cannot remove and wash.

A bath pillow instead of a decent bed pillow, if the neck is the real complaint.

Also considered, and why they are not here

A roundup is only as useful as what it leaves out, so here is what was assessed and rejected for this list.

Considered and not recommended here
ProductWhy it is not on the list
Simba Hybrid FirmScores 7.4. For broad-shouldered side sleepers, and named because neck support for eight hours a night is where this problem actually lives.
Nanu PillowScores 7.9. Adjustable fill at a low price, which is the sensible way to find the height your neck actually needs.
Aeyla BeddingScores 7.6. A coherent range on one fibre, for anyone whose real goal is making the whole routine feel better.
Sealed fibre bath padsThe commonest design sold and the shortest lived. Water collects in the middle of the pad where nothing dries, and mould follows.

How this list is made, and who made it

Independence

No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.

Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.

What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.

What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.

What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

See editorial independence, corrections and the author page.

How these were chosen

Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.

A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.

Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.

I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.

Prices move constantly. Judge the cash price on the day rather than any percentage beside it. See every review on this site or where the real savings are.

Questions people ask

Why do bath pillow suction cups stop working?

Textured or non-slip bath surfaces defeat suction entirely, and soap and oil break the seal. Wipe the area clean and wet it before fixing, and if your bath has any surface texture, buy a design that hooks or straps over the rim instead.

How thick should a bath pillow be?

Thinner than most people buy. Too thick pushes your chin toward your chest, which is the same fault as a bed pillow that is too high. It should fill the gap between the rim and the back of your head while keeping your neck in line with your spine.

How do I stop a bath pillow going mouldy?

Hang it up to drain after every bath, choose a design that drains rather than a sealed fibre pad, ventilate the bathroom afterwards, and check the cover is removable and washable.

Do baths help you sleep?

A warm bath an hour or two before bed is associated with falling asleep more easily, and the mechanism is thought to be the drop in body temperature afterwards rather than the warmth. Do not fall asleep in the bath itself.
