Verdict

7.6/ 10

A bedding range built on eucalyptus lyocell, and the useful thing this page can do is tell you the order to buy in. Most people upgrade a bed from the bottom up, starting with the most expensive item, when the cheapest changes give you more of the improvement.

Buy it if

You want to change how your bed feels and you would rather spend fifteen pounds first than six hundred.

Avoid it if

You want the cheapest bedding available. Closed-loop processed fibre costs more and always will.

The scores

Overall
7.6 / 10

A coherent range built on one genuinely checkable fibre claim.

Value
7 / 10

Not cheap. The price is attached to a process rather than a brand.

Feel
8 / 10

One fibre across the range, which makes the choice simple.

Moisture handling
9 / 10

Lyocell absorbs moisture into the fibre. This is what you notice.

Sizing and depth
9 / 10

Proper depth range, which is rarer than it should be.

Durability
9 / 10

Strong on this, and it is one of the reasons to buy it.

Care and washing
9 / 10

Closed-loop processing is verifiable, unlike most fibre claims in bedding.

The order to upgrade a bed in, by cost against effect

Start at the top of this list, not the bottom

Almost everyone upgrades a bed in the wrong order, starting with the mattress because it is the thing they think about. Here is what actually changes how a bed feels, cheapest first.

Bedding upgrades by cost and effect
ChangeRough costWhat it fixes
1. PillowcaseTen to twenty poundsThe layer directly against your face. A polyester case insulates and holds moisture.
2. Duvet togThirty to eighty poundsWaking up hot. More often the cause than the mattress, and far cheaper to change.
3. Pillow heightThirty to seventy poundsNeck ache. The most common problem misattributed to a mattress.
4. SheetsFifty to a hundred poundsSurface feel, and deep sheets that actually stay on a modern mattress.
5. TopperA hundred to two hundred poundsA mattress that is sound but too firm. Not a sagging one.
6. MattressTwo hundred and upwardsSupport. Nothing above this list fixes support.

The exception is straightforward: if your mattress has dipped more than about 25 millimetres, skip to the bottom. Nothing above it will help and a topper will follow the dip within weeks.

Otherwise, work down. Two people in three who tell me their mattress sleeps hot have a polyester pillowcase and a 13.5 tog duvet, and both are fixable for less than a hundred pounds.

Why lyocell rather than bamboo or cotton

Lyocell is the one fibre in bedding where the word on the label tells you about the process, not just the plant.

Against bamboo. Most bamboo fabric is viscose, produced by a process that typically does not recover its chemicals, and brands rarely publish which process they used. Lyocell uses a closed-loop process where the solvent is recovered and reused, and that is part of the definition rather than a claim.

Against cotton. Cotton is a thirsty crop and cotton bedding handles moisture by absorbing it at the surface rather than into the fibre, which is why cotton sheets feel damp when you sweat and lyocell does not.

What lyocell does not do. It does not conduct heat away dramatically faster than cotton. The cooling effect comes from moisture management, and the sensation people call sleeping hot is usually clamminess rather than temperature. A fibre that moves moisture feels cooler because it feels drier.

How to not ruin any of it

Lyocell is strong and heat sensitive, and most complaints come down to washing it like cotton.

Wash cool. Forty at most, thirty is better. Hot washes weaken the fibre and cause pilling.

Tumble low or line dry. High heat is what damages lyocell fastest.

No fabric softener. It coats the fibre and blocks the moisture handling you paid for. The same applies to towels, and most people do it anyway.

Do not overload the drum. Friction causes pilling, and a packed machine is friction.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Bedding upgrades are approached from the most expensive item down, with the mattress treated as the answer to almost every complaint about a bed. The cheapest changes deliver more of the improvement for most problems. A polyester pillowcase insulates and holds moisture directly against the face, a 13.5 tog duvet is too warm for many modern insulated homes, and the wrong pillow height is the most common cause of neck ache misattributed to a mattress. All three cost a fraction of a mattress and are reversible.

Should you buy it?

Yes, and start with a pillowcase rather than the whole range. Bedding is the cheapest way to test whether a fibre suits you, and a case changes how a bed feels more than its price suggests.

Work down the list above before replacing a mattress, unless yours has actually dipped. See the Aeyla brand review for the fibre in more detail.

Questions people ask

What should I upgrade first on my bed?

The pillowcase, then the duvet tog, then the pillow height, then sheets, then a topper, and the mattress last. Most people start with the mattress because it is what they think about, and the cheapest changes deliver more of the improvement for most complaints.

Why is my bed too hot?

Two people in three who say their mattress sleeps hot have a polyester pillowcase and a 13.5 tog duvet. Both are fixable for less than a hundred pounds, and both are more often the cause than the mattress.

How do I wash lyocell bedding?

Cool, at forty degrees at most and thirty if you can. Tumble low or line dry, because high heat damages the fibre fastest. Skip fabric softener, which coats the fibre and blocks the moisture handling you paid for.
