The distinction that matters
A returns policy on an unused mattress means you can send it back if you have not slept on it. Once you have, it is yours.
A sleep trial means you can sleep on it for weeks or months and change your mind.
Firmness is the thing buyers get wrong most often, and it cannot be judged in a week. A new mattress feels different for about a fortnight, partly because it is settling and partly because your body has adapted to whatever you slept on before.
So buying without a real trial means getting firmness right first time, on a purchase you live with for eight years. That is why a trial is worth more than a percentage off.

The five questions that decide whether a trial is any use
Trial length is the number everybody quotes and the least important of the five.
1. Is there a minimum period before you can return? Many require 21 to 30 nights first, which is reasonable, because bodies adapt slowly and early returns are usually premature.
2. Who collects it, and who pays? A 30 kilogram mattress is not something you post. Free collection is standard among the better brands and is not universal.
3. What condition must it be in? Almost always clean and undamaged. A stained mattress is usually not returnable, which is why a protector matters more on a long trial, not less.
4. Can you exchange, or only return? Exchange is more useful. If the firmness is wrong you want the right firmness, not your money back and the same decision to make again.
5. Does it apply through third party sellers? Usually not. This is where most trials are lost, and a few pounds saved is a bad trade for the main reason you chose the brand.
A protector protects your trial, not just your guarantee
The point nobody explains
Trial terms typically require the mattress to be in a condition fit for collection. A stained mattress is usually not returnable even inside the trial window.
So the longer the trial, the more valuable the protector, because the period in which something can be spilled is longer. A 365 night trial gives you a year to change your mind and a year in which one glass of wine can end that option.
Fit one before the first night. And use a thin fitted protector rather than a thick quilted pad while you are still judging firmness, because a quilted pad is effectively a thin topper and masks the thing you are assessing.
How to actually use a trial
Give it a fortnight before forming a view. The first two nights tell you almost nothing. A short-term increase in stiffness while your body adjusts is common and usually passes.
Change one thing at a time. If you replace the mattress, the pillow and the duvet in the same week, you will not know which one is responsible for anything.
Re-check your pillow height after the mattress arrives. A softer mattress lets your shoulder sink further, so you need less pillow. This is the most common reason a new mattress gets blamed for neck ache that is actually the old pillow.
Note the date the trial ends. Put it in a calendar. Trials expire quietly.
What not to accept
A returns policy described as a trial. If it says unused or unopened, it is not a trial.
A trial you lose by buying through a marketplace. Marketplace return windows are typically 30 days and often condition-dependent, which is a returns policy.
A trial with a collection fee you have not checked. Ask before ordering rather than after.
A long trial as a reason to buy a weak mattress. The trial is insurance, not the product. If the construction is poor, you will be using the trial.
Judging a mattress in the first week. The commonest reason a good mattress gets returned.

Independence
No brand pays to appear on this site and no placement is sold. Some links earn a commission if you buy, which never changes a score, an order or a verdict. Several of the lowest scores here are on products that carry commission, and several recommendations carry none.
Who writes this. Kyle Klinkradt has worked in the mattress and bedding industry for over ten years across retail, distribution and brand partnerships, and has handled, sold or assessed products from every major UK bed-in-a-box brand. Every review on this site is written by one person, so the scores mean the same thing from page to page.
What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
