This is a practical question about furniture, and it has a clear technical answer.
Three properties matter: responsiveness, or how quickly the surface pushes back; edge support, because usable surface area is not only the middle; and noise, which comes from the frame far more often than the mattress.
The awkward part is that responsiveness and motion isolation are opposites. Deep memory foam, which is the best material in the world at stopping a partner's movement reaching you, is the worst at pushing back. You cannot have both, and most couples need to decide which matters more across the whole night.
The compromise is a hybrid with a high spring count: responsive enough at the surface, with enough independent springs to damp movement.

The row worth noting is memory foam. It is genuinely the best thing available for a couple where one wakes the other, and it is the least responsive material in the category. Those are the same property described twice.
Noise is almost always the frame
People blame mattresses for squeaking and it is usually not the mattress.
A loosened joint is the commonest cause. Tighten every bolt on the frame, and add a nylon washer where metal contacts metal. That fixes most of them.
Slats moving in their brackets is next. A strip of felt or adhesive foam where each slat sits stops the rubbing.
Metal frames are more prone to this than solid timber, because metal on metal has nothing to absorb movement.
The floor. A bed on uneven boards rocks slightly with any movement. Felt pads under the legs, or shims to level it, stop that.
If the mattress itself is the source, it is usually an older open coil unit where the linking wire has worn, and that is not repairable.
Edge support, which almost nobody specifies
Edge support decides how much of the mattress is genuinely usable, and it is rarely stated on a product page.
Look for reinforced side panels or firmer springs around the perimeter, stated explicitly. Where it is not mentioned, assume it is not there, particularly below about £400 where reinforcement is uncommon.
It is also the first part of a mattress to fail, so it matters beyond this page: it is where you sit to dress, and a collapsing edge is the earliest visible sign of a mattress reaching the end.
And the frame decides more than you would expect
Slat spacing no more than about 7.5 centimetres, because wider gaps cause sagging and void most guarantees.
A centre rail with a supporting leg on a double or larger, and two legs at super king width. The middle of the frame carries the most load and is where movement and sag both concentrate.
Solid timber bolted together holds rigidity better than cam lock fittings, which loosen in the same hole each time the bed is moved.
A good mattress on a loose frame is the most common version of this complaint.
What not to buy
Deep memory foam, if responsiveness matters to you. It absorbs rather than returns.
An unreinforced budget mattress, if edge usability is part of the question.
A metal frame, if noise is a concern, unless you are prepared to felt every contact point.
A very plush high spring count mattress, expecting responsiveness. Thin-gauge springs contour rather than push back.
A new mattress to fix a squeak. Tighten the frame first.

What the assessment is. Construction specifications against what they physically do: spring height and where in the mattress it sits, spring count for the size, gauge, whether the base is sprung or foam, foam density where it is published, comfort layer depth and material. Then the commercial terms that decide what you are actually buying: trial against returns policy, guarantee length against the company's UK trading history at Companies House, and the regulatory record.
What it is not. This is not a laboratory. I do not publish pressure-mapping data or claim to have slept eight years on every mattress here, because nobody has and pages that imply otherwise are not telling you the truth. Where a judgement rests on construction rather than long-term use, the review says so.
What gets a product removed. Leaving the UK market, a specification change that makes the review inaccurate, or a corrected fact. Brands that have withdrawn are kept on the site with the score removed rather than quietly deleted, because people still search for them.

How these were chosen
Every product here has its own review on this site with a score out of 10, and the score is a judgement rather than an average. Nothing appears in a list because it pays more.
A score is against the market, not against its own range. The cheapest mattress in a lineup is usually priced to make the model above it look reasonable, and the flagship of a budget range has risen into a bracket where better brands compete. Both are judged against what else you could buy for the money.
Everything listed can actually be bought in the UK. That is not a given: Casper withdrew in July 2020 and Leesa no longer sells here, and both still appear in current British roundups with affiliate links attached.
I do not pad the list. Where only three or four products genuinely qualify, there are three or four. A list of seven when the category contains four good ones is a list with three bad recommendations in it.
