Hypnia Review: Every Model, Scored

A European mattress brand that appears in UK search results, and I am not scoring it because I cannot confirm a settled UK retail position.

I earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page. It never changes what I recommend, and I publish negative verdicts on brands I earn from. Editorial independence.

Verdict

A European mattress brand that appears in UK search results, and I am not scoring it because I cannot confirm a settled UK retail position. What is worth reading is the checklist for any brand in that situation, because several appear in British roundups without a British presence.

Who should buy it

Nobody, until you have personally confirmed UK sizes, a UK returns route and who answers a warranty claim.

Who should avoid it

Anyone treating a European listing as equivalent to a UK one. Sizes and recourse both differ.

Four questions before buying from any overseas brand

This applies to Hypnia and to every brand selling into Britain without a settled UK operation.

1. Are the sizes UK sizes? A UK double is 135 by 190 centimetres. A European double is 140 by 200. A US full is 137 by 191. None of them are interchangeable, and a mattress in the wrong system means your bed frame, your fitted sheets and any future replacement are all wrong too. See the UK bed sizes guide.

2. Who would you contact in year three? Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 your statutory rights sit with whoever sold you the mattress. If that is an entity with no UK presence, a ten year guarantee is a promise that is considerably harder to enforce.

3. How does a return physically work? A 30 kilogram mattress going back across a border is a different proposition from a UK collection. Ask who arranges it and who pays.

4. Is there a genuine sleep trial, or a returns window? A returns policy on an unused mattress is not a trial. Firmness is the thing buyers get wrong most often and it cannot be judged in a week.

Brands in UK lists that are not sold here

Check before you trust a list

Casper withdrew from the UK in July 2020 and Leesa is no longer sold here. Both still appear in current British mattress roundups with affiliate links attached.

It requires no dishonesty. A page that ranks earns whether or not the product can be bought, updating it costs time, and removing a brand shortens the list.

Four questions for any mattress review: does it say when it was last checked rather than published? Does the brand have a live UK site with UK sizes and prices? Is a UK company named in the footer, checkable free at Companies House? Does it name an author with relevant experience?

A review failing all four is not necessarily wrong. It is unverified, which on a purchase you live with for eight years is not the same thing.

What to buy instead

If what appealed was a well-specified hybrid at a sensible price with a real trial, several UK brands do that and can actually deliver.

Origin Hybrid at 265 pounds with up to 3,000 pocket springs and a 200 day trial. Otty Original at around 500 with a 16 centimetre spring core. Nectar for the 365 night trial, the longest in the UK mainstream. Silentnight from a manufacturer making beds in Barnoldswick since 1946.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Mattress brands without a settled UK retail presence appear in British roundups alongside brands you can buy here, and the difference is not visible on the page. European sizes do not match UK sizes, so the mattress will not fit a UK frame or UK fitted sheets, and statutory rights sit with whoever sold it, which may be an entity with no UK presence and no practical route for a claim in year three.

Should you buy it?

No score, because I cannot confirm you can buy this properly in Britain. If you want to pursue it, work through the four questions above and satisfy yourself on all of them first.

If you want a well-specified hybrid with a real trial and a UK returns route, start with the best mattresses in the UK, where everything listed can be bought here.

Questions people ask

Should I buy a mattress from an overseas brand?

Only after four checks. Are the sizes UK sizes. Who would you contact in year three. How does a return physically work. And is there a genuine sleep trial rather than a returns window on an unused mattress.

Will a European mattress fit a UK bed?

No. A UK double is 135 by 190cm and a European double is 140 by 200. The mattress will not fit a UK frame and UK fitted sheets will not fit the mattress.

Why do UK lists include brands you cannot buy here?

A page that ranks earns whether or not the product can be bought, updating it costs time, and removing a brand shortens the list. Casper and Leesa both still appear in current British roundups.
