Eve Wunderflip Premium Hybrid Mattress Review

The most practical answer to firmness uncertainty on the UK market. Most brands solve the problem with a trial period. Eve solves it with construction.

Verdict

7.7/ 10From £1099 UK single, before discount

The most practical answer to firmness uncertainty on the UK market, and almost nobody talks about it. Unzip the cover, flip the top section, and you have a different firmness. Most brands solve this problem with a trial period. Eve solves it with construction, which is a better answer.

Buy it if

You genuinely do not know what firmness suits you, or you and a partner disagree, and you would rather solve that at home than through a returns process.

Avoid it if

You already know your firmness. You are paying for adjustability you will never use.

Why flipping beats a trial period

Firmness is the single hardest property to judge before buying and the single most common reason people are unhappy with a mattress. The whole industry has settled on one answer to this: a long trial period.

Trials are good and I score them highly throughout this site. But think about what returning a mattress actually involves. Getting a 28 centimetre mattress back into something transportable, arranging a collection, sleeping on a sofa or an old mattress in the meantime, waiting for a refund, then ordering again and repeating the adjustment period. Most people will not do it twice, which means the trial is really one chance rather than unlimited chances.

The Wunderflip lets you unzip the cover and flip the top section. That is an evening's work and you can do it as many times as you like, in either direction, across the whole life of the mattress. If your preferences change, or a new partner arrives, or you develop a shoulder problem, you adjust rather than replace.

That is a structurally better solution to the problem and I am surprised it has not been copied more widely.

The scores

Overall
7.7 / 10

A genuinely clever design let down by a list price that only makes sense on discount.

Value
6 / 10

At 1,099 list it is poor value. On a 40 to 50 percent cut it becomes interesting.

Support
8 / 10

Up to 2,500 pocket springs at 28cm, and you can tune the surface to your build.

Temperature
7 / 10

A spring layer at 28cm moves air adequately. Not a cooling specialist.

Edge support
7 / 10

Reasonable. The flippable construction limits how much perimeter reinforcement is possible.

Motion isolation
7 / 10

Pocketed springs with a substantial comfort layer above.

Trial and guarantee
8 / 10

200 nights, which you are less likely to need on this model than any other.

The case for couples who disagree

This is where the Wunderflip earns its place most clearly, and it is a problem the category handles badly.

Two people of different weights and different sleeping positions genuinely need different firmnesses. The usual answers are all compromises: buy a medium and have neither of you happy, buy a zip-and-link and accept a join down the middle, or add a topper to one side and accept that it slides.

The Wunderflip does not solve this completely, because you still cannot have two firmnesses at once in one mattress. What it does is remove the cost of getting the compromise wrong. Try the medium side for a month. If the lighter partner is uncomfortable, flip it. Nothing has to be returned and nothing has to be bought again.

For a couple who have argued about mattress firmness, that is worth real money.

The Eve situation, stated plainly

Eve is not the company it was

Eve Sleep entered administration in October 2022. The brand and its assets were acquired and Eve now trades under Bensonsforbedsretail Ltd, which is stated in the small print on its own site. Buying new today means buying from Bensons, which is large and established, and that is reassuring rather than worrying.

If you already own a pre-2022 Eve and are researching a warranty claim, your position is different. Guarantees do not automatically survive an administration intact. Your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 sit with the retailer who sold it to you, not with the brand, and run up to six years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. If that retailer still exists, that is your route.

One practical upside: because Bensons owns Eve, you may be able to see one in a Bensons store. On a mattress whose entire selling point is adjustable firmness, lying on both sides before buying is worth more than any review.

Should you buy it?

At a 40 to 50 percent discount, which Eve runs regularly, yes. The design solves a real problem that the rest of the category only manages, and up to 2,500 pocket springs at 28 centimetres is a competent build underneath the clever part.

At 1,099 list, no. At that price the Simba Hybrid Pro and Origin Hybrid Pro both give you more construction, and you can try the Simba in a shop.

Questions people ask

What is the Eve Wunderflip?

A mattress with an unzippable cover that lets you flip the top section to change the firmness, giving a medium side and a firm side in one mattress, over up to 2,500 pocket springs at 28cm. You can flip it as often as you like across the mattress's life.

Is flipping better than a long trial?

Structurally, yes. Returning a mattress means reboxing it, arranging collection, sleeping on something else and repeating the adjustment period, so most people will not do it twice. Flipping is an evening's work and you can do it repeatedly in either direction.
