UK mattress complaints report

Most mattress complaints fail for two reasons, and both are avoidable before the mattress arrives.

The two reasons claims fail

A stain. Almost every guarantee excludes stained mattresses absolutely, regardless of whether the stain has anything to do with the fault.

An unsuitable base. Slat gaps over about 7.5 centimetres cause sagging and are excluded, so the frame creates the fault and then disqualifies the claim.

Both are preventable for under £40 and five minutes with a tape measure.

The complaints that recur

What people report, and how it usually resolves
ComplaintUsual outcome
Sagging or body impressionsSucceeds if beyond the stated depth, usually 25 to 30mm, and the base was suitable
Too firm or too softNot a fault. This is what a sleep trial or comfort exchange is for.
Sleeps too hotRarely upheld as a fault unless it was sold on a specific cooling claim
Lost height after monthsFoam compression set. Hard to evidence because it looks identical.
Smell on deliveryNormal off-gassing for days. A strong smell after weeks is worth raising.
Delivery damageSucceeds if reported immediately with photographs
Trial refusedFrequently because it was bought through a third party, where the trial does not apply

The second row is the biggest single category of unhappiness and the one least likely to be a claim. Firmness is what buyers get wrong most often, and it is a comfort issue rather than a defect.

Who you claim against, and for how long

Your statutory rights are against the retailer, not the manufacturer, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, as described, and last a reasonable length of time.

Up to six years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, five in Scotland. That is a limit on bringing a claim, not a guarantee the mattress lasts that long.

In the first six months, a fault is assumed to have been there from the start unless the retailer proves otherwise. After six months the burden shifts to you, which is why photographs, the proof of purchase and sometimes an independent assessment matter.

A manufacturer guarantee sits alongside this and is worth only the company behind it. Four brands reviewed on this site have gone.

How to complain effectively

Put it in writing. Email, so there is a record. Phone calls are hard to evidence.

State the fault, not the feeling. A measured dip of 32 millimetres is a fault; uncomfortable is not.

Measure and photograph. Lay a straight edge across the mattress with the bedding off, measure the deepest gap, and photograph the measurement in place.

Say what you want. Repair, replacement or refund, and be specific.

Give them the purchase details and a reasonable deadline to respond.

Keep everything. Order confirmation, delivery note, the exchange of emails.

If the retailer refuses

Escalate in writing to a complaints or head office address first, stating that you are relying on the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Check for an alternative dispute resolution scheme. Many retailers belong to one, and some trade associations offer conciliation.

Section 75. If you paid by credit card and the purchase was over £100, the card provider is jointly liable and you can claim from them instead. This is the strongest route when a retailer or brand has stopped trading.

Chargeback may be available on debit cards, with shorter time limits and weaker protection.

Citizens Advice for guidance, and the small claims route if it comes to that.

Preventing the complaint

Fit a protector before the first night. The single most cost-effective thing on this page, because a stain voids most guarantees absolutely.

Measure the slat gaps before the mattress arrives. Over about 7.5 centimetres and plywood costs a few pounds. On a double or larger, check there is a centre rail with a leg.

Buy direct if the trial matters. Trials frequently do not apply through third parties, and a returns policy on an unused mattress is a different product.

Rotate head to foot every two to three months, and keep a note that you have.

Ask for foam density and spring count in your size, in writing, before buying. The answer, or the refusal, tells you something.

How this site works

Nothing here is paid for by a brand. No manufacturer has copy approval, a preview, or the ability to change a score, and where a link earns a commission that never changes a ranking.

Where a brand does not publish a specification, that is stated rather than estimated, because an absent number is itself information. The corrections log and the products I will not recommend page are both public.
