Verdict

7.6/ 10

A Tempur built around a more responsive version of the material, which is the distinction most buyers never get explained. Tempur's ranges are not tiers of quality so much as different feels, and picking on price rather than feel is how people end up with the wrong one.

Buy it if

You want Tempur's material with more bounce and easier movement, and you have lain on one for ten minutes.

Avoid it if

You want the classic slow-sinking Tempur feel, or you sleep hot. Dense viscoelastic foam runs warm whatever range it is in.

High density material holds its shape far longer than ordinary memory foam.

What Tempur's ranges actually mean

Tempur ranges by feel, not by tier
RangeFeelSuits
OriginalThe classic slow sink. Moulds around you and takes a moment to release.People who want to feel held, and do not move much in the night.
SensationMore responsive. Easier to turn over and change position.People who move a lot, or who find Original hard to shift on.
CloudA softer comfort layer above the support material.Side sleepers wanting a plusher surface.

These are feels, not quality tiers. A more expensive Tempur is not automatically a better mattress for you, and the common failure is choosing on price and getting a feel that does not suit how you sleep.

The single most useful question: do you find it hard to turn over on memory foam? If yes, Sensation exists for you. If you like the enveloped feeling, Original is what you want.

Test it lying down, not with your hand

Why people judge Tempur wrongly

Tempur's material softens in response to body heat over several minutes. Press it with your hand in a shop and it feels dense and unyielding. Lie on it for ten minutes and it is a different mattress.

So the standard way people assess a mattress in a showroom, sitting on the edge or pressing it, produces exactly the wrong impression of this one.

Ten minutes, in the position you actually sleep in, with a pillow of roughly your usual height. Both of you if you share a bed. And at home, give it a fortnight, because the first two nights on a Tempur are not representative and a lot of people return one before it has settled.

A cold bedroom also changes the feel. Tempur is firmer in an unheated room in January than in a warm room in July, which is unusual and worth knowing.

The heat problem applies to every Tempur

The density that makes the material work also makes it warm, and no Tempur range escapes it.

Dense viscoelastic foam has small closed cells and almost no air movement, and it softens in response to body heat, which means it is designed to hold warmth at the surface. Heat leaves a mattress when air moves through it, and in solid foam there is nowhere for it to go.

If you sleep hot, no amount of spending inside this range fixes it. A hybrid with a deep spring layer is a structurally different answer: Otty's 16 centimetre spring core at around 500 pounds, or Origin's LumbarCloud at 35 centimetres for 797.

What Tempur genuinely gives you in return is motion isolation that nothing sprung matches, because there is no mechanical linkage between one part of the surface and another.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Tempur's ranges are read as quality tiers, with the more expensive assumed to be better, and they are different feels rather than different levels. Original gives the classic slow sink, Sensation is more responsive and easier to move on, and Cloud adds a softer comfort layer. Choosing on price rather than on how you move in bed is the most common way people end up with a Tempur that does not suit them.

Should you buy it?

Yes if you want Tempur's support with easier movement, and you have lain on one for a proper ten minutes rather than pressing it.

No if you sleep hot, where no Tempur range solves it and a deep hybrid is a structurally different answer. Give any Tempur a fortnight at home before judging it.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between Tempur Original and Sensation?

Feel, not quality. Original gives the classic slow sink that moulds around you. Sensation is more responsive and easier to turn over on. Cloud adds a softer comfort layer above the support material.

How should I test a Tempur mattress?

Lying down for ten minutes, not by pressing it. The material softens in response to body heat, so pressing it by hand gives exactly the wrong impression. At home, give it a fortnight.

Do Tempur mattresses sleep hot?

Yes, across every range. Dense viscoelastic foam has small closed cells and almost no air movement, and it softens in response to body heat. No amount of spending inside the range fixes it; a deep hybrid is a structurally different answer.
