For this Tempur mattress review, we are looking into TEMPUR®, which is a name that you have probably heard of, as they have been a top manufacturer in the UK and the globe for many years.
In this Tempur mattress review, we will not only do an in-depth analysis but also explain the differences between the models; Tempur Original mattress, Tempur Cloud mattress, Tempur Hybrid mattress and finally the Tempur Sensation mattress. As well as the different versions available so you can make a better decision.
Let's get right into this Tempur mattress review (SUMMARY AT THE END).
Tempur Mattress Construction
When it comes to making mattresses Tempur is in a league of its own. For years, competitors have attempted to replicate this Danish-made material composition and secret formula.
What you probably didn't know is that over 30 years ago a team of NASA scientists created a superior material to support astronauts from takeoff unknowing to them they had just created a product with great commercial potential and this is how TEMPUR® was born.
Tempur mattresses are also tested year over year to ensure material longevity and quality remains at the highest standards.
All four models from Tempur (Tempur Original, Tempur Cloud, Tempur Hybrid mattress and Tempur Sensation) have 3 versions they can be ordered in;
- Supreme version (21 cm)
- Elite version (25 cm)
- Luxe version (30cm)
Generally, the main difference between the versions is a foam layer is added or removed. For the purpose of this Tempur mattress review, we will look at the Elite versions of all 4 models as this is the most popular version from Tempur and it also is a mattress depth that is more common and in line with the other mattresses we have reviewed.
The Tempur mattresses are no turn! Meaning, you do not have to do any heavy lifting to flip the mattresses as each model is designed that you only need to sleep on the top side. That way mattress maintenance is kept to a minimum. What Tempur does recommend is once in a while rotating the mattress from head to foot to equally distribute your weight along the mattress throughout the mattresses lifetime.
The Tempur Cover
We will start off the Tempur layer review by the cover. All Tempur Elite mattresses come with a QuickRefresh™ removable top cover. This allows you to easily remove the top cover and freshen up your mattresses at temperatures of up to 60 °C. The QuickRefresh™ Cover is made of 99% polyester and 1% elastane.
The lower half which made of predominantly polyester, elastane, modacrylic, and viscose is also removable and can be washed at temperatures of up to 60 °C. We had done a bit of snooping for this Tempur mattress review and found that for some Tempur Hybrid mattresses, their underside may not be washable but dry clean only. Please check the label stitched in the inside to know what you may and may not do.
It is also interesting to know that all Tempur covers made for the British market are OEKO-TEX certified. This means it is free of harmful chemicals and is safe for human use.
Interestingly, is that the Tempur mattress covers also each have their own unique design, which really shows the attention to detail that is put in each of these models even just in the cover.
Tempur Mattress Layers
We thought we would run through a quick explanation of each layer that Tempur offers, so you understand the benefits and then can see how they work together depending on which model you are looking to get.
Tempur Extra Soft Material
This soft layer instantly cushions you for extraordinary comfort. It includes formaldehyde, which is a naturally occurring organic compound which can be found everywhere.
Tempur Comfort Material
The Tempur comfort layer is foam from TEMPUR® which has been designed to be more flexible than standard polyurethane foam. This layer is almost always at the top of the mattress as it has the softest texture.
Tempur Support Material
This layer includes Visco-elastic cells that actively mould and adapt to your body. This intermediary layer also is strategically placed to balance out pressure disparities.
Precision™ Micro Coils
The micro coils from the Tempur mattresses are not exactly micro, as you will see in the Tempur Hybrid mattress layers below. As generally micro coils are anywhere from 2-5cm in height, whereas Tempur's micro coils are around 10cm. This gives more support than regular mattresses in a box.
Durabase™ Technology
This support layer is denser than the other layers. This extends the mattresses longevity, so you are insured in the long run. The Visco foam grades are also made with the cleanest raw materials as well as produced in an environmental and clean way.
Below you can find the exact depths and layers used in each of the models.
Tempur Original Mattress Layers
The 4-layered Tempur Orignal mattress is a great option for those that are not looking for a particular mattress but one that is balanced and has it all. The 4-layered construction allows your body to smoothly transition into all the layer, thus feeling the benefits from all in a smooth manner.
- Tempur comfort material (3cm)
- Tempur support material (9cm)
- Durabase™ technology (6.5cm)
- Durabase™ technology (6.5cm)
Tempur Cloud Mattress Layers
This mattress has a fair amount of upper soft Tempur material, a mid, transitional layer of Tempur support material to ease your body into the lower Durabase foam which gives the mattress its support. The Tempur Cloud mattress is best for those looking for a softer mattress with a slow response.
- Tempur extra soft material (7cm)
- Tempur support material (7cm)
- Durabase™ technology (11cm)
Tempur Hybrid Mattress Layers
The main difference is that this is a hybrid mattress. The Tempur Hybrid mattress is a mixture of comforting foams with a softer and slower pressure response but merged with the fast response of the coils for lasting support. The Tempur Hybrid made it onto our Most Recommendable Luxury Mattress list.
- Advanced Tempur material (4cm)
- Dynamic support technology (8cm)
- Precision™ micro coils (10cm)
- Durabase™ technology (3cm)
Tempur Sensation Mattress Layers
We would recommend this mattress for those who are back and/or side sleepers. The Tempur Sensation mattress makes use of Tempur Comfort material with layers of Dynamic Support foam and the Tempur Support foam. Giving a bit more of a push back as compared to the other models but still with the pressure-relieving benefits of the foam layers.
- Tempur comfort material (2cm)
- Tempur support material (4cm)
- Dynamic support technology (4cm)
- Durabase™ technology (11cm)
How Thick Is the Tempur Mattress?
As mentioned before that there are 3 versions of the models each with their own thickness. As we are concentrating and reviewing the Elite version of all 4 models, the mattress is 25cm in thickness which is the standard depth here in the UK so your bed frame should be compatible with any of the Tempur mattresses.
The Tempur mattresses can also withstand quite a bit of weight, up to 23 stones or 146 kgs per side (maximum 2 persons).
Tempur Mattress Firmness
From this Tempur mattress review, we also did some research to see where these models would be situated on our virtual scale.
Coming in as the softest mattress is the Tempur Cloud mattress which we rated around a 4.5 out of 10 on our scale. Next, we had the Tempur Original mattress that had an additional foam layer give it a slightly more firm feel leaving it at 5.5 out of 10. The Tempur Hybrid mattress because of the coils is rated at around a 6.5 out of 10 and finally, the most firm of them all, the Tempur Sensation mattress at 7.5 out of 10.

Aesthetics and Design
If you were to look at all the online mattresses sold here in the UK, you would notice a common trend. They are nearly all white, grey and with a touch of blue. This is no coincidence, these colours work well in nearly every room setting. What we particularly like about Tempur mattresses is that the zip lane gives it a modern look to it.
All of the Tempur mattresses have a white top and grey lower half and depending on which model you take the colour of the lining around the zip will change.
Tempur Mattress Trial and Warranty
All Tempur mattresses come with a 100-night trial, this means you can use the mattress in the comfort of your own home to really make sure that the mattress is the right one for you. The mattress is delivered at no extra cost to you.
Tempur requires you to keep the mattress for at least 60 days before deciding to return it. We see this as a good thing as we always advise buyers to try out the mattress for a few weeks before deciding to return it so your body can receive the full benefits of the mattress.
To make sure you are covered in the long run, they also guarantee their mattresses for 10 years. In this time they guarantee its performance "it will retain at least 95% of its height, with no lumps or bumps".
Tempur Mattress Delivery
Currently, all Tempur mattresses are delivered within 14-28 days, this duration is so long because they are so sought after. We understand that Rome wasn't built in a day but this is something that could be improved.
If you order online from TEMPUR UK you will receive FREE home delivery and setup (2-man delivery) and you can arrange the day of delivery. This is a great plus for those who would have trouble bringing the mattress up to the top floor as many competitors only deliver to the door.
