Simba Cool Foam Mattress Topper Review
A foam topper from the brand whose entire mattress argument is that springs beat foam, which is a tension worth naming.

Verdict
A foam topper from the brand whose entire mattress argument is that springs beat foam, which is a tension worth naming. Cool foam is close to a contradiction in terms, and the topper is still useful for the job foam toppers are actually good at.
Buy it if
Your mattress is sound but too firm, you want real cushioning, and you do not already sleep hot.
Avoid it if
You sleep warm, or you own a Simba hybrid. Putting foam over springs cancels the thing you paid for.

| Type | Foam mattress topper with a cooling treatment |
| The tension | Simba's mattresses are sold on springs beating foam for airflow |
| What foam toppers do well | Cushioning. More than mesh, micro-springs or wool. |
| What they do badly | Heat. Foam insulates you from your mattress. |
| What it does not change | Support, or a sagging mattress |
The scores
Good at cushioning, and at odds with the brand's own argument about airflow.
Fair, and there are better answers if heat is a factor.
Foam cushions more deeply than any other topper material. The genuine strength.
A cooling treatment on foam is a surface effect. The foam still insulates.
A topper does not provide support. Scoring it otherwise would mislead.
Reasonable life. Toppers take concentrated wear and none last forever.
Simba's standard terms.
The worst pairing. It sits above the springs and blocks the airflow.
Cool foam is close to a contradiction
Simba's mattress marketing rests on a sound argument: heat leaves a bed when air moves through it, foam has small closed cells and almost no air movement, and a spring layer has large continuous gaps that flex with every movement.
That argument does not stop applying when the foam is in a topper.
A cooling treatment on foam conducts heat away from your skin at the point of contact, which is real, and the heat then needs somewhere to go. In foam there is nowhere: it moves a few centimetres and stops. So the surface is cool when you lie down and warm by the middle of the night.
On a Simba hybrid this is the worst case. The mattress works because air moves through its spring layer. Putting a foam topper on top cuts you off from exactly the mechanism you paid for, and no treatment on the foam changes that.
What foam toppers are genuinely best at
Having said that, foam is the best topper material for one thing, and it is the thing most people buying a topper actually want.
| Type | Softens | Effect on heat |
|---|---|---|
| Memory foam | Strongly. Deep cushioning. | Makes you warmer |
| Spacer mesh | Moderately | Neutral to cooling |
| Micro-spring | Moderately | Neutral to cooling |
| Latex | Moderately, with bounce | Neutral |
| Wool | Mildly | Regulates moisture |
If your mattress is genuinely too firm and you want a real change rather than a small one, foam delivers it and nothing else does to the same degree. The honest trade is that you will be warmer.
So the decision is simple: how much does each of those two things matter to you? If you are cold and your mattress is hard, buy foam. If you run warm, buy Simba's micro-spring topper instead, which is the same brand solving the same problem consistently with its own argument.
Measure first, and anchor it
The 25 millimetre rule
A topper changes firmness. It does not change support. If your mattress has a dip of more than about 25 millimetres, a topper will follow that dip within weeks. Lay a straight edge across the mattress and measure the gap at its deepest point.
Every topper slides. Use elastic corner straps if it has them, or a deep fitted sheet sized for the mattress plus the topper together. A 28 centimetre mattress with a 5 centimetre topper needs a 33 centimetre sheet.
A correction worth making
Commonly repeated, and wrong
Cooling treatments on foam toppers are presented as solving the material's heat problem, and they address the surface rather than the mechanism. Heat conducted away from the skin has nowhere to go in foam, so the effect fades within the hour. On a hybrid mattress the consequence is worse than neutral: the topper sits above the spring layer and cuts the sleeper off from the airflow that was the reason for buying the mattress.
Should you buy it?
Yes if your mattress is genuinely too firm, you want real cushioning rather than a small change, and you do not already sleep warm. Foam does that better than anything else.
No on a hybrid, and no if you run hot. Simba's micro-spring topper is the same brand solving the same problem in a way consistent with its own argument.
Questions people ask
Does a cooling treatment fix a foam topper?
No. It conducts heat away at the point of contact and the heat then has nowhere to go, because foam has small closed cells and almost no air movement. The surface is cool when you lie down and warm by the middle of the night.
What are foam toppers actually best at?
Cushioning. Foam softens a firm mattress more deeply than mesh, micro-springs, latex or wool. If your mattress is genuinely too hard and you want a real change, foam delivers it and the honest trade is that you will be warmer.
