Verdict

8.0/ 10From £524.99 UK single

The Otty Original with a cooling cover, for twenty-five pounds more. Since the Original is already one of the cooler mattresses in the UK thanks to its 16 centimetre spring layer, the question is whether the cover adds enough to matter. For genuinely hot sleepers, yes. For everyone else, buy the standard Original.

Buy it if

You sleep hot enough that it disrupts your sleep, and you want the coolest version of the best value hybrid in the UK.

Avoid it if

You do not have a specific heat problem. Twenty-five pounds is better spent on a protector.

It used to be called something else

Renamed in 2026

Otty renamed this model the Original Ice Hybrid in June 2026 and dropped the EU sizes at the same time. It was previously sold simply as the OTTY Hybrid. Older reviews discussing the OTTY Hybrid may be describing this mattress, the current Original, or a predecessor to both, so check the specification and the review date rather than the name.

What a cooling cover actually does

Cooling covers work by conduction. The fabric is engineered to draw heat from your skin faster than a standard knit, which produces the cool-to-the-touch sensation when you first lie down.

What that gives you is a genuinely better first fifteen minutes and a slightly lower surface temperature through the night. What it does not do is remove heat from the mattress. That is the job of airflow, and airflow is why the Otty runs cool in the first place: a 16 centimetre spring layer moves air in a way no cover can.

So the honest assessment is that the cover is a real but marginal improvement on a mattress that was already handling heat well. Twenty-five pounds is a fair price for that. It is not a transformation and Otty does not claim it is.

A correction worth making

Commonly repeated, and wrong

Cooling covers are frequently presented as the solution to sleeping hot, and they address the symptom rather than the cause. A cover changes how the surface feels on contact by conducting heat away from the skin. It cannot remove heat that has built up inside the mattress, which is a function of airflow through the structure. A cooling cover on a deep all-foam mattress will feel pleasant for fifteen minutes and then stop mattering. On a mattress with a deep spring layer it works, because the airflow underneath is doing the real job.

Should you buy it?

Buy it if heat genuinely disrupts your sleep. The combination of a cooling cover and a 16 centimetre spring layer is about as cool as a UK mattress gets at this price.

Otherwise buy the standard Otty Original Hybrid and put the twenty-five pounds towards a mattress protector, which will do more for the life of the mattress than the cover will do for your sleep.
